Extremely limited hours, only restaurant around for miles, military friendly. My friends at work must think I’m crazy to try new restaurants all the time. They must wonder where the hell they’re going when I tell them to load up in the car at Camp Atterbury and I drive someplace other than Edinburgh, which is where everyone from Atterbury will eat if they’re going out. But I had something else in mind, we were going to go 9 miles past Edinburgh in the middle of nowhere and try this strange and elusive Flat Rock Cafe.First thing you have to say about this place pulling up is that it looks like a house. The house trend continues when you get inside. The tables are mismatched, there’s a bunch of crazy crap on the walls (antiques, original pictures of Marilyn Monroe’s Playboy spread, etc) and there’s a bunch of locals who sit around in the place until it closes, which is at 1 p.m. Talk about a short lunch! So I ordered the tenderloin sandwich (with bacon because I’m a badass) and my friend ordered the cheese burger. We both got fries. The tenderloin was giant, way beyond the boundaries of the bun which made it fun, but somewhat aggravating to eat. It was seasoned well though, so I can’t complain. The bacon is something I probably wouldn’t do again because it added too much extra salt per bite. My friend enjoyed his cheeseburger as well. The fries were standard fare. The coleslaw was claimed to be made in house, which is a nice touch, but not one I would’ve realized had the waitress not told us (because it was still overly soupy). In the end, the nicest thing happened to my friend and I, the waitress told us that the meal was on the house because we were wearing our uniform. I thought that was just awesome and then I felt a little sad because I wondered how many Soldiers actually came out this way to give them their business. My guess was we were the first ones in a while. But I would come back because this is the only place this small village has going for it and I’d like to see them stick around for another few decades.
