Used to be great. This used to a great place….now its pretty much horrible.I have actually had carryout food here that was burnt ( schezuan chicken the peppers and peanuts in it were burnt to a crisp)…not to mention greasy…I have also had food that you could tell was just plain old.This place is near our house so It used to a convenient place for lunch or carryout…after 3 bad meals in a row where it seems like angry kindergarteners with woks are making your food….you just stop going,If you want good Chinese, Chens is close by and a thousandfold better.
Used to be my favorite. But now, not so much. I can’t put my finger on it, but the food just doesn’t seem to be as fresh as it used to be. On my most recent visit the waiter was HORRIBLE! Normally language is not an issue, but he definitely either didn’t understand us, or he was just bad! Took our order and never took our menus off of the table or cleared the soup dishes either. Had to ask him to take both and remind him of our drink order twice. I’m hoping he was just filling in for someone or new, because it was not a good experience.
The Mandarin House is the best Chinese Restaurant in the South Bend area. Service is excellent and the food/sauces are top of the mark. The Crab Rangoon is great as well as Cashew Chicken!
Their egg rolls are phenomenal!. South Bend has plenty of good Chinese restaurants. Mandarin House is near the top. The portions are a good size, as is the price. I usually get the Mongolian beef. Definitely be sure to try their egg roll and egg drop soup – both are simply the best I’ve had.
Getting expensive.
Get the lunch specials. Yes, Mandarin House is lacking in parking and atmosphere. The food is, admittedly, hit or miss. I have loved dishes, such as wonton soup, the General Tso chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, and the 3 duck choices. But other dishes, like the sweet and sour chicken, are so-so to bad. The best thing about the place is the lunch special take-out, which is an amazing deal…roughly $6-7 for an egg roll, soup, rice, and an entree. In my experience, the servers have actually been kind, quick, and attentive. Worth a shot.
The food is ok, the parking is tough and the service is so-so. I always get a chuckle that much of the decor never changed from the old Italian restaurant that used to be there. Overall, I’d rather do J.W. Chen down the road.
