High sodium alert!!. We got into town late and had The Stables recommended to us by the hotel manager. Found waitstaff to be pleasant and food to be ok. Just ok. The reason I’m compelled to write is because the vegetables were heavily salted with kosher salt (the chunky kind). By the time I was half-way through my meal, my lips started to swell. For two days after, my tongue burned from this salt overload. Had it not been so late and had we not been so hungry, I would have sent it back to the kitchen.

Terrific atmosphere! Exactly what I’m always looking for. I travel all over and don’t like the typical chains (Applebee’s, Red Lobster, Friday’s, etc.). I love the local, locally owned, restaurants with a great ambiance. Mike, the bartender, was VERY informative about the menu and history on local breweries and the restaurant, Stables. I am always hesitant on ordering seafood in the Midwest (unless in Chicago, Indy, St. Louis, Cincinnati), however, I ordered the crab cakes and they were great! No filling, all crab, great remoulade sauce. I WILL CERTAINLY BE BACK! Great martinis, too.

Go Somewhere else. Just returned a carry out order at Stables Steak house. Got the Fresh Fish, and Chicken Amaretto. I know, I know…it’s a steak place; you should have gotten the steak. It’s still no excuse for what was served tonight. The house salad had old browning lettuce, an old slice of tomato and onion and 3 or 4 dry carrots like the kind you give little kids. I’ve got fresher ones in the frig. The Caesar salad was of the same quality. It wasn’t even disturbed by a fork. The baked Mahi Mahi, was simply that. Baked. Nothing on it. Nothing on it at all. Was it would have a lemon butter sauce…nope. Just baked. Lyonnais potatoes?…potato cubes browned on one side with wedged onion pieces (incompletely cooked) with Italian spices and pepper. The Amaretto chicken consisted of a full chicken breast (both sides), butterflied, with almond slices on a bed of rice pilaf (think the kind which comes from a box). The ticket for this, one drink, plus tip was $80.00. The place looks great, the staff is only mediocre and the food is well under par, overpriced. When I returned the food, Will, the manager, said he was sorry, it was usually better, and did I want a gift certificate or something. Brilliant.

Ask for Will, he gives the place an edge. For appetizer, get thw Black n Blue Bites or the Oysters Rockefeller. Get the New York Strip and skip the ribeye….add with it a spinach salad and the creamed spinach…. You won’t be disappointed

Go elsewhere. Service at the bar was horrible. 10 minutes to get the first beer and 40 minutes for the second. The bartender walked by multiple times and didn’t even look our way. Three other people had empty glasses as well for about the same amount of time. We knew there would be a wait to be seated to eat but after an hour and a half a group left and there were 5 empty tables behind us for about 20 minutes before we asked to be seated. The waiter at the table was nice when we saw him. The food is way over priced for the quality. The french onion soup was great though. There are certainly better places to eat in Terre Haute. The best thing about the place is it is beautiful and the piano player is good.

A little rushed. Nice place, quiet piano player, good for a relaxed evening out. The food was very good, our waiter was just OK. The filet and portehouse were very good but came to the table about half way through the salads. Reservations recommended. $68 with tax – iced tea and two steaks.

Pretty good, but go to J. Ford’s for the money. It’s a decent steakhouse, but there’s a better steak restaurant less than 5 minutes away that will leave you with roughly the same bill. I’d recommend going to J. Ford’s Black Angus over Stables.
