Come for the food, stay for the pie. Great coffee, and good food. But the real star of the show here is the apple pie. Best I’ve ever had… don’t tell mom.
Best coffee house in town. Good lunch too!. We’ve tried all the other chain and independent coffee places in Valpo, but we’re regulars at Blackbird (2-3 times/week). Best coffee and espresso drinks in town, they still pull every shot by hand. Bakery items are also among the best in town, pastries, bagels, cookies, pies, brownies all very good. Menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches/wraps, quiche, breakfast items with daily specials. Great cozy, casual atmosphere. Good fast service, little if any turnover in their Millennial servers and cooks, and there are lots of regular customers too, so Blackbird must be doing something very right. Again, we’ve tried all the others but rarely go anywhere else for espresso or lunch in Valpo.
Eh….. I frequent Blackbird cafe alot. I go around three times a week. I love the items, but the staff is extremely rude. When ordering I am always met with groans like I am bothering them with my business. They always seem to have an attitude about everything. Although, a very nice woman (who I assume is the owner) is always extremel;y friendly and kind. Maybe her attitude should rub off on those rude workers. The food I recieve is always inconsistent. When ordering kettle chips, I have recieved Ruffles 3 times. Last time I checked that was not on the menu. I love the Paninis but taking 28 minutes to recieve one when tehre are only 2 other customers in the entire building is a tad ridiculous. Overall, the food is delicious, but the service needs a lot of work.
My Favorite Place in Valpo. I’m a regular, I admit it. I’m in Blackbird nearly every morning, but so are a lot of people. You’ll find a LOT of regulars at Blackbird, and that’s saying something right there. What brings us back every day? Amazing service, excellent food, and a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where all the staff ask your name and remember your regular orders, so eventually they have your drink ready before you even make it to the counter. It’s the sort of place where Dan and Mary, the owners, come out to greet customers regularly and get to know them by name. They are always updating their menu with new, creative, homemade soups and salads, they serve wonderful sandwiches and paninis, pot pies, macaroni and cheese, quiche, baked goods, etc. It’s casual dining, but with an accessible, sophisticated touch. They also always offer vegetarian and vegan options. I recommend the Orange and Beet Salad with Gorgonzola, the macaroni and cheese, any of the soups, and the pie. You have to try the pie. It does get a bit crowded during rushes, so table space is sometimes limited, but most of the time solo diners will give up tables to parties, and Mary makes a point of finding seating space for everyone. Very family friendly with an eclectic clientele. I (obviously) highly recommend it.
It depends on what you’re looking for.. Their desserts are fantastic! (however their coffee is pretty mediocre)if you are it in the mood for dessert food, than its a great choice. however, if you’re yearning for a good cup of coffee… cornucopia coffee company is about a block away, so just go there.
Not that great. I recently picked up some lunch from the cafe, food was decent, but I was really excited about the desserts I purchased, I actually got a salad then splurged and got 3 different desserts to try them out. I was so disappointed I even went back to convey my feelings and possibly try something different. I was treated with utter disrespect, not how I am usually am treated there but oh well, you live and learn. I also was told that they make great desserts so great that they are opening a bakery, wow good luck with that… With the quality of the products I purchased I assume it won’t last long. Save your money and either go to a real bakery or even get something at the grocery store I’m sure it will taste better than what I tried to eat
