I don’t understand this place. All of my friends rave about it, but I’ve been here three times and it is an okay place. The positive: the beer selection is great. The negative: everyone raves about the hamburgers, but I’ve ordered burgers 3 different times and the chef apparently does not know what medium is! In fact, one was so over cooked that it was DRY. The bartender was nice enough to remove it from my bill because there was a number of complaints that day. My friends have ordered tater tots and both time over cooked. Lastly the men’s room always smells like urine. I don’t understand how you have custom made beer barrel urinals but the bathroom smells like piss. Overall, not that impressed.
If you haven’t been to the Franklin House recently, you must go immediately. Between the best craft beer list in Valpo (believe me, made by people that actually drink the stuff, a list to be proud of), kick-ass food (highlighted by the House Burger) and an atmosphere that the staff and new owner have worked hard to improve upon every day, this is a bar that has everything you would want…assuming you like bars. Seriously, the old POS owner hasn’t been around for two years and the place has improved so much. Food quality, beer list, renovations all moving in the right direction.AND it’s the oldest bar in Porter County (est. 1857). Give it a shot…for the love of beer, burgers, and History! You won’t be disappointed.
