Pretty good!. Xin as a very good addition to the restaurant scene in West Lafayette. The food is very, very good and the prices are reasonable. We’ve had the hot pot dishes which is a wonderful way to eat with a group of your friends. There’s something to be said about literally sharing a meal. The menu is not geared toward a non-Korean customer, but if you are adventurous, you could discover a new favorite dish. Seriously, you could simply ask the servers for additional information. Some of the other reviewers have commented on two things: the 18% gratuity and the service. Let me give my two cents worth on that:1. The added 18% gratuity is NOT mandatory. If you look at the bill, you do have the option of giving more or less. Personally, I don’t mind. I routinely give 20% tip anyway. I for one am relieved I don’t have to consider how much to give, Unlike in Europe or Asia where servers earn a salary, in the United States, customer tips make up almost all of a server’s take-home pay. These people can earn as little as $2.00 an hour! So I don’t begrudge Gaza for ensuring that their servers get their due and are not stiffed by clients who begrudge a server a reasonable tip unless the latter serves them hand and foot.2. The unfriendly service. I have never experienced this at Xin. Sure, the servers are not fawning over me and my friends and promising us that they’ll take care of us that day, but the servers have been polite and always willing to answers questions. They’ve never been rude or unfriendly. If they are tight-lipped, I assume it’s just a cultural trait. In many countries, servers are supposed to be UNOBTRUSIVE. Perhaps the other reviewers expect servers to banter and chat with customers, or who expect servers to return to the table every 10 minutes to ask how things are. Aaargh! I find these annoying and disruptive. I prefer going to a place where the server gets my order, serves my food, and hands me the bill when I ask for it at the end of the meal. If I need a water refill, I simply wave a server over. If I have a question about a dish, I ask. If I need a new set of chopsticks because I dropped mine, I get it myself or ask for one.So I suppose the food AND service at Xin are all right for me. So long as the server is not snarling, cursing or glaring at me, I’m good.
