Food was excellent! Had the pasta, it was yummy. Their gelato is also very good. We had great service and the place was very neat and clean. The bread served with olive oil wasn’t the greatest, but the food is reasonable and of great quality. Will likely go back!

Too bad. My pizza was pretty good. My wife’s drink as really bad: she ordered a Negroni, but got something like a Negroni-spritzer, which somehow lacked alcoholic content which is ironic considering the ingredients it should be made from. Her pasta dish was pretty lame, not much flavor. The vibe of the place was pretty odd, not sure what they are thinking. If you’re trying to be a classy Italian joint, ditch the wall of TVs.
As others have said, when they first opened as well as several months past, the service is horrible. The food is eh, not worth the price. The owner and staff talk Italian in front if you assuming you don’t understand what they are saying, but many do and it’s curt unacceptable conversations about you and others waiting and waiting for seating. I’ve had the wrong drink brought to me, had to wait for drink, then order, then service, then dessert, then check. An hour meal was 2 hours. I’d be ok with this if the majority of the time wasn’t just sitting there waiting. Eg, if drink service was prompt, if the food was worth the wait and price… With having an AMAZING restaurant next door for which we all know there’s a good chance of a wait to be seated but it’s OH SO WIRTH IT(!!), I’m going to choose The Cafe-better menu, WAY better service, same price range, knowledgeable staff who are always friendly, and never talk smack about you-at least not right in front if you. Sorry +39. Given the lack of higher-end food in this city, you should, but aren’t, making the cut to be a contender with a solid patron base.
I went here the first week it opened and thought I’d give their service a break because it was so new. A few months down the road and the service still sucks. Food is ok.
Terrible service, terrible food. We made reservations, sat early when hardly anyone else around on a Sunday evening. After 15 mins of waitresses walking by, we had to ask where ours was. The lady who came to our table made all sorts of excuses about how busy they were, which was a complete head scratcher. She took our drink order, which again took much longer than it should and we wondered if she was coming back. We saw her seating others, getting their drinks and their bread. She then went to work behind the bar. There we still sat with nothing. When she finally brought the drinks, she wanted to leave without taking our order and we reminded her we have already been in the restaurant for a long time. BTW, they charge for every sode that comes in a slender glass full of ice—probably not even 1/2 can’s worth. Anyway, 2 of the 3 of us get our food. The 2 pasta’s looked dry from the start and they indeed were, the noodles were hard. Despite ordering the exact same thing, one came overflowing in a bowl, the other on a plate. The owner stopped by to check on us, we complain that #3 food isn’t here yet. He zaps out, never brings the food but takes our empty soda glasses. The food finally comes. We had to ask the waitress for the sodas back. The owner brings us one, not the two he took. We had to ask for parmesan while others automatically got it. We got one tiny cup (maybe 2 Tblspns) to share. Never had salt/pepper like all other tables had. We told the waitress it was a horrible experience and showed her the pasta. She did take it off the bill, which still didn’t help much as this place is all a la carte and expensive. I wrote a short note on my receipt and handed it directly to the owner. Despite slowly walking out, he read it and put it down to talk in Italian to others behind the bar. For being such a nice place with neat decor inside, it was all very disappointing and odd. We felt like we were on candid camera. I went home and ate from my own kitchen later that night. Also, wait staff and owner wore denim leggings and jeans (some with holes) and trendy tennis shoes. Owner has long hair and runs his hands through it and flips it around when he talks to people. We aren’t prudes but the staff didn’t seem to match the ambiance—it almost felt like the pizza joint down the street was running the restaurant while someone else was away. In observing a few other groups around us, it appeared that others were having hit/miss service and questioned their food, too. I mentioned this at work and learned from two others who live in Ames that they personally had bad experiences there as well. Good luck!
Absolutely fabulous!! Great traditional Italian food (I get to say this because I am from a traditional Italian family) great atmosphere, great owners! I have been to +39 twice and both times have had consistently great food. This is a great venue to visit in Ames.
