I will not return to the Olde Main Brewing Company. I expected to have a good experience based on previous reviews, but that was not the case. The food was terrible, from appetizers to main course. The service was awful as well. There was a couple at a table next to us that sat for 15 minutes without being greeted before they got up and left. This place may be hit or miss…
Steeply downhill. This place has been an anchor for downtown Ames for years, and once had competently turned out if not very original pub food. Now, they have considerably narrowed their menu, raised their prices, reduced the size of portions and the quality of their ingredients, and have generally failed the few times I have visited in the last year. Today I was served a spinach salad that was advertised as having poached pears, blue cheese, and a warm bacon/balsamic vinaigrette. The spinach was mostly woody stems, the pears were not poached, there was about a teaspoon total of blue cheese, and the dressing was missing entirely. I waited over 35 minutes for this masterpiece, and was charged $9 for it. I will not be returning. I feel sorry for the brewmaster. He deserves a better kitchen to accompany his beer.
Awful for the Price!. My family went there for Thanksgiving 2012 and it was absolutely the worst food possible! They were set up more for Breakfast at 1:30 than Thanksgiving. Cheesy eggs, bacon, sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits and an omelet station. Other than that there were yucky green beans, the standard mashed potatoes, marshmellow yams. etc. Of course there was also ham and turkey but without horseradish and only canned cranberry sauce. Plain and short everything was flavorless and bland. There was an attempt at a fruit bar but it just included a few melons and pineapple. The dessert table was mediocre, and had nothing for a gluten free person. This is a marked contrast from a few years back when we had gone for a prior thanksgiving. During that visit, they had had several sides available, a great fruit bar and dessert table loaded full with chocolate mousse and chocolate covered strawberries.I am just saying that for $18+ a plate it should have been better. My family ended up spending a little over $120 for my husband and I and four children. We could have had a catered Thanksgiving that would have been much better from Hy-Vee. We just expected more out of Old Main.
Service was good, however kitchen very slow. Place was not that busy ??? Good is ok, I would give it a B-
Beer and food were good, but small portions
Beer is a hit – service could be a miss.. I go here for the beer and some of the food. The service however can be hit or miss. It seems that some of the staff is too busy talking to friends or watching the game to take care of other customers. Lucky for me they offer their best beers in bottles so I can grab a six pack to enjoy at home and not have to roll the dice on service by going in.
Awesome deserts.
