I had just been saying how I iwished that Ankeny had a bar type place that I could go to and eat an amazing pizza and there it was…..right under my nose and just down the street with one of the most amazing pizzas I have had in a while …..Benchwarmers is my new favorite place to go…..and just hang out…..
AWESOME. We have gone SEVERAL times since it’s reopened and the food has been great! Love the soups, cavatelli and the Philly Steak wrap and sandwich! The atomsphere is comfortable and the staff is really pleasant!
Finally had a chance to try the food at the re-incarnated Bench. Sorry to say it was not good. The Philly sandwich is advertised as made with prime rib. It was served loaded with thin strips of beige-colored meat that looked like they came off the scrap pile at the butcher shop. The meat was so gristly it was inedible. Stick to the beer and free popcorn and enjoy the football games on the many HD TVs.10 Jul, 2011A New and Improved Benchwarmers!. The Bench was an institution in Ankeny for many years. It closed a couple of years ago and has now been re-opened under new ownership. Here’s what’s new and what’s the same at Benchwarmers.New:It’s clean! The old Bench had atmosphere, but it was nasty dirty, from the carpet to the kitchen to the restrooms. The new owners have cleaned the placed up big time! The menu. New menu choices. Couldn’t try them when I visited because the computer was down (??), but they look interesting. Cavatelli is still on the menu. The decor. The focus seems to be on Ankeny High School coaches. Wall murals and menu items feature the coaches’ images and names. The party room in the back is now walled off. What’s the same?Same basic layout – TV’s, booths and hi-tops. The pool tables are gone, replaced by hi-tops.The popcorn machine is still there, although I noticed they dump big bags of popcorn into the machine to be warmed by a hot lamp, rather than actually popping the corn in oil.The FairPlay scoreboard is still there.Weeds are still sprouting from the roof gutters.Give the Bench a try!09 Nov, 2010The Bench closed in the fall of 2010.
Love It.. I was a big fan of Benchwarmers before they closed and still a big fan. I’ve been there twice since they re-opend. Pizza was excellent and Becker Blue Cheese Burger even better. I’ll be back again.
Disappointing. We used to be a big fan, but we’ve given it two tries since it’s reopened. Both times, we were severely disappointed. The food was bland and portions were small. You would be much better off just making something quick at home, and it will still taste a lot better than whatever they are serving. The hamburgers are not even a safe pick unless you enjoy frozen out of a bag w/ a slap of cheap cheese. Definitely nothing about the food screams restaurant worthy.
