Good Grief – A primier location downtown and they serve the poorest excuse for Mexican you can find. This city has an over abundance of Mexican eateries so it would be easy to find better.
Decent fajitas horrible service.. As a native Texan, who grew up eating nothing but TexMex, this place is okay as far as Iowa Mexican restaurants go. Their waitstaff is horrible. It usually takes them awhile before someone saunters over to take your order. No one could explain to me what exactly they put on their tostada; and when I asked for it with out meat, they looked at me like I was crazy. Then while we were having dinner, this dad and his too little boys(about 2&4) were eating. They got up so that the little boy could go to the restroom and the dingy waitress cleared their table. Needless to say, they just ended up leaving, the kids were too antsy to wait for them to remake their food.
Electric. Great margaritas, good fajitas , great location, great margs, sometimes too loud for conversation – the food needs improvement and the service is inconsistent. But it still manages to pull of a good time.
You’d think by the look of La Cantina, it’d be great. It has a nice Mexican grill feel to it. Their food however, is an insult to the Mexican culture. Ive tried it many times thinking something has to be good here. Whether it’s a taco, enchilada, hamburger or salad it’s all awful. The lettuce is brown an wilted, the enchiladas are just flavorless beef rolls, the tacos are the same thing but in a hard shell. It’s just absolutely disgusting, and it’s appalling that people will actually eat this food. If you want real Mexican go to La Salsita or Salsa del Rio!!
Worth a try. Went here early on friday nite, and was pleased with the large portion size and quality. Chips and Salsa were nice, as well. Nice atmosphere, as it has lots of windows, and a variety of decor. Fast service. Will visit again.
Great salsa, great fajitas (not oily like other places), great location, great margs, sometimes too loud for conversation
Life is too short to eat at bad restuarants. We ate at La Cantina on Friday evening and I thought for a minute I was eating at Taco Johns… it was that bad. The Margarita was bitter, when we ordered our entrees they came with in 5 minutes, it was clear the entrees were made up ahead of time and micorwaved. At LaCantina, you get the first basket of chips free but have to pay for subsequent ones. My combo plate was a stale quesadilla and an enchilada that was so tough I had to cut it with a knife, my side of beans tasted like a can of Old El Paso refried beans, My spouse had an enchilada plate and was disappointed and believe me when I say he is NOT a picky eater he usually eats anything you put in front of him.We love to go to locally owned restaurants but we won’t be patronizing La Cantina again.
