We had the buffet! One of these reviews said not to but I didn’t read the review until we got home.Something in the buffet said pickle. Wow that was a kick in the taste buds. Some other things were also enjoyable. Next time we will order off menu.
A typical Indian restaurant and store! Nothing in the menu that’s out of the ordinary! However the taste of the food is good and makes it worth the money. They have a grocery store attached which is frequented by Indian families for their weekly shopping.
Great food!. I have been twice now and enjoyed the food both times.
Taj Mahal – good food for a good price. The food at the Taj Mahal is delicious. On the weekends, you can have a buffet-style meal, which ends up being both wonderfully tasty and affordable. None of the food is too spicy. They offer several types of vegetarian curry, rice, several chicken curries and dishes, including chicken tika masala and tandoori chicken, and naan and pakora, as well as desserts. The service is pretty good; there is only one waiter, and he manages to take care of the entire restaurant in decent time all by himself. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Cedar Rapids.
Just stopped in for lunch, I think the food has gotten better. It’s a great place for lunch!25 Feb, 2012Inconsistently Good. The Taj is where i learned to love Indian. I may be a little biased but i have no reservations about saying it is inconsistent. Sometimes service is great, sometimes not. Sometimes the vindaloo is perfect sometimes you cant tell what’s vindaloo and what’s tikka masala. The buffet is great if your a beginner but you will find the menu to be more consistent so bring friends, or lots and eat family style. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you have. Naan here is above average and the store is cool to walk through. It isn’t a great building but many good eateries aren’t the best looking.
Acceptable food – Unacceptable service. This place wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything to write home about either. The restaurant has no ambiance and the building is run down. The waiter seated us and brought us poppadoms – but no napkins. He also didn’t bring our drinks or return to the table until the food was ready, Therefore, when my dinner companion spilled some of chutney on his shirt, we had no napkin to wipe it up and didn’t have a server to ask. I had polished off all of my water (and he had yet to bring our drinks) and also didn’t refill that until after the food was already on the table. The food was actually pretty good. I have had better Indian food, but the choices for Indian food (or any authentic, ethnic foods for that matter) are quite limited in Cedar Rapids. I asked how hot their medium was and was told it was pretty spicy. Unfortunately, however, it was mild enough that my 10 year old daughter who doesn’t like spicy food would have eaten it. Additionally, my dinner companion ordered his Hot, and it was equivalent to medium salsa at best. The flavor was still good though and the food was fresh. However, like many Indian restaurants in the bread basket, you won’t get it hot, even if you order it that way.I also ordered a glass of wine with dinner and there were pieces of cork floating in the glass. They were also out of the only Syrah they had on their wine menu, so I settled for a Stonehenge Cab.I was discouraged by the Kheer as well. It was more of an American style rice pudding than a traditional Indian Kheer. The Chai, however, is excellent.
Great Indian food but not the cleanest facility. There’s only two Indian restaurants in Cedar Rapids. Taj Mahal and Taste of India. Both are good but Taj Mahal is better if you’re not vegetarian. I HIGHLY recommend you don’t do the buffet. Please order off the menu. It’s like there’s two different Taj Mahals. The first has a cheap nasty buffet and the other has great Indian food. Indian food in my opinion doesn’t do well under a heat lamp.My favorites include all variations of the vindaloo, the curries, spinach pakoras, and samosas. All are good and very reasonably priced. Again I’ll warn you, it’s not the same under a heat lamp. Order off the menu. They offer a limited variety of beers but several are Indian and go well with the food.Taj Mahal also has an attached Indian grocery store. I like to cook Indian food and am able to get most of my ingredients from here.Overall the food is very good and reasonably priced when ordered off the menu. There are two negatives:1. The buffet isn’t that good.2. The restaurant itself is not clean. If you have to eat in a spotless facility you will not like the Taj Mahal. It’s dirty. I like the restaurant and don’t mind a place that’s a little dirty but just in case I’m attaching a link to the Linn county health report.http://dia.iowa.gov/food/controller.aspx?cmd=establishmentDetails&eid=RS57-0056280
