Syrup Smoothies. I don’t like coffee, but I love smoothies and can usually get really good smoothies from coffee shops. Instead of using fresh (or even frozen fruit) to flavor the smoothie, they rely on flavored syrups. I am pre-diabetic so I barely drank any of it. Instead of tasting like a smoothie, it tasted like drinking a melted popsicle.

Location Great at 8:00. The Coffee Emporium & CafeTime: MorningFood: Lemon Poppyseed MuffinDrink: Coffee (black)This little coffee joint is great if you work or will be traveling through downton Cedar Rapids. I walk past it everyday and notice a lot of suits going in to get a coffee and a bite to eat. I tried it out and found it enjoyable. The coffee was good, but not great. At $2.00 for a 20 oz, there isn’t much to complain about. The muffin was good, but not great. It’s really the convenience of the location to those who work downtown that makes me like it.However, this restaurant is tiny. It is probably smaller than some celebrity walk-in closets. For this reason, I would not recommend coming here to enjoy the atmosphere. Coffee Emporium doesn’t do anything fancy in regards to roasting or any of that higher-end type coffee shops, but they do brew decent coffee. Though, it is self-served after you order. It’s a little strange and cheap feeling to have the coffee sitting in a commercial thermos for the customer to dispense. They are closed on the weekend, as seems to be the case with most downtown restaurants in Cedar Rapids. I believe this can be directly attributable to the major downtown employers and how those workers really are what keeps these restaurants going. If you work downtown or are passing by, stop in and grab a cup o’ joe for the ol’ road. You’ll enjoy it.Overall: 7.5/10Location: 10/10Coffee: 5/10
