Came to drake for breakfast since it was easy to find and never been to Iowa before. I mean eggs , how hard is that. We were seated quickly. Drinks came and order was taken promptly. Folks are nice white bread mid west I have come to know as conservative but kind. Here on business . The place seems clean. Just nothing like the reviews I read. The setting is a 1950s dinner and not a bad job. Kinda cute. I ordered the eggs benidict with hash browns. The food came and everything was hot and cooked well. Nothing was greasy and to my order. The sauce lacks any flavor, not that it’s made wrong, just the nature of the region I have learned. Flavor is simple and good. The hash browns were impressive. Soft and crisp but not too much grease. Refills on drinks were prompt and the food was good. To wrap up. I had a very good experience for breakfast. So roll the dice if you so choose. I would come back with no reservation. But I’m only here a couple days and want to try other places. Nice meal.

I’ve been ordering the chicken jack sandwich since early college about a decade ago. It is hands down the most consistent chicken sandwich I’ve had. The chicken is cooked to perfection every time. Yeah, service can be spotty, maybe a little cranky, but it’s a diner. I can let that pass for a decade’s worth of reliable food. That is a rarity.

Disappointed. I have been here twice. This first time the service was top notch. The food although tasted fine was skimpy for the price. I had a breaded tenderloin and although it tasted fine, it was not great and I think it was the smallest tenderloin I have ever seen and my bottom bun was soggy. The waitress brought me a fresh bun that was barely toasted, in addition some of my sweet potato fries where over cooked. We started with the onion rings and both times they where pretty darn good although I think they need to drain the bucket of grease off of them before they serve them. The second time I was there the waiter was just not that into us, although he did bring my friend a nice piece of cake for her birthday. I had the Reuben sandwich for $9+. The corned beef had good flavor what there was of it and a portion of my sandwich was kind of dry. Seriously for the price they charge for their sandwiches you would think they would at the very least a bit more substantial. This time the sweet potato fries where cooked fine and tasted really good, I really like the sweet potata fries here. I know so many people who really love this place, but for me it’s about service and the food, decor is really not up there on my list of priorities when I review a place. Cleanliness is and it seems to be very clean although I failed to visit the bathroom, which is usually a tell tail sign. I think if I’m going to go for diner fare I will go back to the Home Plate Dinner where I’ve never had a bad meal or bad service in more than a dozen visits. For me the food they serve does not justify the price they charge. It’s just not that good.

Typical Diner. Hit or miss service. I’ve been to this restaurant many of times, being a former Drake student. There are some things that this restaurant does really well—-its breakfast menu, burgers and shakes to name a few.The service is hit or miss. I think it might just be due to lack of training by the management, because it seems like the the servers are either exceptional (probably due to good training at previous restaurants) or pretty lousy (due to lack of training at this restaurant and maybe this is his or her first serving job??) I recommend that the management train the service staff as a whole a bit better. However, of all the times I have been here the food has been consistently good…not great, but good. And, depending on who your server is, the service can be excellent.10 Jan, 2012Typical diner. This is a typical diner with the type of menu a diner should have. They do the basics well. Huge burgers, good mashed potatoes, etc. The service is usually very good. My favorite thing about this restaurant is its very large screened in porch and its delicious milk shakes. Being a Drake student, it is always a good end to finals getting fries and a milk shake at the diner. It’s become a staple at the end of each semester.

I ordered the french dip with fries. The hoagie roll was big, the meat portion was way small. I could have cut it in half and moved all the meat to one half and had a decent half-sandwich. For what it cost, I have to declare rip-off. When you go skimpy, you lose customers.

Food is exceptional. Fun and active atmosphere. Criminal events from late 90s make it a must come!
