Tacky. Was in diner today and asked for the manager. employee took me around the corner to another room and pointed to a person sleeping in a booth. 1/23/2014 at around 4:30. also noticed missing ceiling tile above counter area which looked very unsanitary. this needs to be fixed!!

Bad food!. Won’t be back! had breakfast cooked by a full figured woman. hash browns VERY cold, bacon cold and had a rancid taste. EVEN HAD FLECKS OF GREEN IN THE BACON. asked for burnt toast and it came to me and looked like warmed bread. Waitress brought it to me supposed to be burnt – 1/2 piece was a little dark and the rest was light. the woman can not cook! ATE BREAKFAST AT 11:00 – almost positive everything had been sitting since they opened at 6:00 – usually got great food when the GUY cooks.

Fantastic service! The waitress was pleasant and attentive, the owner even stopped by each table to chat and check and see if everything was good. The food was good diner food but desert was the best! I would recommend the food for everyone.

One of the best diners in Des Moines. Love patty melts? This one is to die for. Crinkle cut fries, everyone’s fave. The breakfasts are phenomenal. Great soups. Love this place.

35 minute wait for lukewarm food no better than any other diner I’ve ever been to. Slow, inattentive service. The restaurant wasn’t even half full.

**UpdateWent today, day after Thanksgiving. As much as it pains my to write this, my experience was not good. The service was not good, nor was the food . For starters the waitress was non attentive. The server brought my sis the wrong food. We ordered our hash browns extra crispy-they where not, and our biscuits & gravy where barely warm. Had our waitress bothered to come over and check to see how our meal was she would have found this out. I actually, after waiting too long for a coffee refill went to the counter to get one, then she stopped by to top off my coffee. She mentioned she noticed I’d come up for a refill & apologized, too little-too late. That said the place was not that busy, and if she didn’t spend so much time chatting up with co workers she could be more attentive. The only one who asked about our meal was the previously mentioned server as we paid and left, so I told her. Her response was sorry I’ll have to have them check the holding temp. I told her if I get sick I’ll let them know. I guess what is so disappointing is the fact that I’ve met the owner, whom I didn’t see, and know expects better. I have been going here since they opened, which contrary to a previous posted review has NOT been there forever. The previous long term diner that was here was the Four Seasons Diner, their food was the best, the service was impeccable and the prices where truly diner prices. By definition a diner is lots of good food, good service and great prices. You can call yourself a diner but if you don’t meet these three criteria you are not a true diner, something Des Moines is sorely lacking. Incidentally it was nearly $11 for two eggs, hash browns and a half order of biscuits & gravy with coffee. Diner? I think not!!I noticed the Spoon here has this place as Accent neighborhood, I’m thinking Fairgrounds, hint *across the street from the state fairgrounds. Just sayin’.

Better this time around.. I have gone to the last two diners that have been in this location, the Four Seasons which was the BEST, the Waveland East which was the WORST. Home Plate Diner is not the Four Seasons but it is damn close. I had a tenderloin and it was one of the best I’ve had and fries, they where crinkle cut, my personal fav. My friend had the Bacon Cheeseburger and she said it was awesome. That said I’m looking forward to trying the breakfast. Definitely will go back.
