Bread was good, but then…. Ok, we got a loaf of bread at the market, very good. So we decided to swing in and try some other stuff. I got a chocolate croissant: pretty good although it needed to be warmed up, not sure how fresh it was. My wife and I both got a macaroon: these were ok, but didn’t taste like much more than sugar. I couldn’t taste any coffee in my coffee flavored one. My wife got a piece of cake which she regretted. The frosting seemed to be from Crisco! ..shame. And the raspberry stuff was clearly from a tube. I though their strong suit was bread and we got a baguette to take home, and I assumed this would redeem them back to an average grade, but oh no. Baguette was just bad: just white bread shaped to look like one. So, in all, the cake and baguette were grocery store grade. I’m sure some of their items are good, but most of the things we tried were just bad from a place trying to be a French bakery.
Wonderful. This is my favorite place for breakfast! The pastry is delightful and worth the drive across town.
La Mie is actually very good. It’s a lovely atmosphere and has professional service and beautiful pastries. It’s just that I’ve never had a meal that blew me over. However, as I’m allergic to most fruits, it’s sometimes difficult for me to find something to eat there. I just think I wasn’t meant to enjoy what they have to offer. I recommend it to anyone wanting to eat healthy and high-quality ingredients, but they just aren’t for me. (The chai was good though!)
Good food! Got the veggie scramble and ham and cheese croissant with chai tea. Food presentation was beautiful. Macaroons are very pricy. Not as tasty as other macaroons I’ve tried elsewhere. Customer Service is short conversations since it is so busy but wait staff/cleaning staff are friendly if you smile and are gracious. The place is not set up for large crowds which makes me not want to visit again. Parking was very full in front and back. All seats were taken in house. And people were hawking for a place to sit, asking customers if they were done yet since they were done eating and just sitting and talking. I’m very glad I live in Des Moines where I feel a majority of people are friendly. So i was able to have conversations with strangers. Apparently La Mie is ALWAYS this packed so you just expect it and deal with it. I would love to see La Mie in a new location in a place with more space–like Palmers! And see how things can really improve for them overall as a restaurant.
Amazing! One of the best restaurants in Des Moines! Definitely THE best for fresh made pastries! Yum. Awesome selection of vegetarian options. Love this place!
Amazing food. This is by far the best bakery in town and a great restaurant as well. Only downfall is that it’s too small for the crowds they draw and they’re closed on Sundays. Open a second or larger location and it too will be packed. Most amazing patries I’ve ever had. Have eaten there for dinner and it was also good. By no means the best place in town for dinner, but good atmosphere and good service. La Mie is one of my favorite places in Des Moines.
Too Crowded. Chose the wrong time to go. Shoulder-to-shoulder, people shoving. Very poorly organized line to the counter that swept through the crowded bakery in a circle around a table of unlabeled self-serve pastries. Frustrating experience. I went to try the chocolate croissant which is always sold-out at farmer’s market. Although the shape was not authentic, the pastry itself was perfect. The chocolate inside was a tiny, hard (solid) line of chocolate which was very rich, making the quantities balanced although appearance would suggest otherwise. Although the pastry was very good, I have no desire to return to this bakery after my first experience.
