I used to live in the apartments across the street for two years (2009-2011), and would stop several times a week for drinks, and often, food. This is not a fine dining, night on the town with your lady kind of place, if you expect it to be, you will be disappointed. It is an average, clean, good place for a beer after work joint that serves very very good food. My favorites:Special Salad with House DressingCavetelli Italian NachosJamaican Chicken SandwichPizza (whatever your taste)I now live 3 1/2 hours away in Dubuque, but if I ever had a reason to be back in town, this would be the first place we would visit for dinner and drinks. The house salad dressing is one of, if not the best I’ve ever had. When I lived in the area where it was sold at the local Hy-Vees I was never without a bottle or two in the refrigerator. You will never eat ranch as a dipping sauce for your late night ‘whatever’ if you try it. That is a promise. Very friendly staff, simple but clean surroundings, and by and large a friendly clientele, although rowdy bicyclists can be an occasional issue later at night during riding season. A great place to stop for a drink even if you’re not hungry but in the area. Plus, if you work night shift as I did at the time, they served a full menu until 1AM all week, whatever you want, made fresh and hot. A rare thing even in a larger city. Prices are very fair for everything, or at least they were at the time for Des Moines. A wonderful dinner and a few drinks for $20 with tip? Sign me up. Long story short, if you’re not a snob and love good Italian food, go to Orlando’s. If you like paying $50 for three bites of food and a glass of wine, do yourself, the staff, and the fellow patrons a favor and go downtown. And get a couple bottles of salad dressing for your fridge while you’re there, trust me!
We were referred here by a local while traveling for soccer! Always worried when we show up with 10-12 13 year old girls and parents. One waitress for the whole place during a Hawkeye game and they were efficient and quick getting our food out so we could get to out next game! Food was great too!
