I CRAVE the food at the Rice Bowl!. I live in Minneapolis and I will drive 3 1/2 hours to eat at the Rice Bowl. I never go though town without stopping for take out. It is family owned and my Grandparents (live in Des Moines) ate there weekly. Most people eating there are regulars. Everybody in my family loves the Shrimp with Lobster sauce. That is the most amazing dish! I have never had a dish come close at any other Chinese restaurant. We fight over the leftovers. We also love beef with pea pods. The beef is so tender in your mouth. Their sweet and sour pork is delicious. It’s big pieces of pork and vegetables. Their Chicken almond Subgum Chow mein is a really good dish on the more plain side, but I loved it as a kid, and still do now. The Rice Bowl has the absolute best wonton soup. The noodles are so thin, they melt in your mouth. The broth is real homemade chicken stock. It is so light and delicious. Their Egg Foo Young is wonderful, too.I can’t say a bad thing about this place. It’s delicious!
I tried Rice Bowl for the first and last time the other day. The food is expensive for what you get. It was NOT very tasty at all. I’m mad we paid so much for sub par food at best.
If you hate flavor this place is for you . Average customer 70 plus02 Jun, 2014Tastes like Chin King canned. Crabby lazy waitress didn’t help old grump has been there for years. Must work cheap Kenny would like that..One mans opinion. It is awful
This is one of my all time favorite places to eat! The food is always fresh, delicious, and plentiful. Very much comfort food and the atmosphere is relaxing 🙂
The Best Original Cantonese Cuisine. The Rice Bowl is the Oldest Chinese Restaurant in Des Moines still in operation. You don’t get a 40 year old reputation if you aren’t doing something right. The food is uniquely original. Cantonese cuisine from the Guangdong province brought to us through early immigrants from China. It is beautifully sublime in its reliance on Homemade Stocks, onion, garlic ,soy sauce and sesame oil. If you want heavily spiced or dark sauce based food, this is gratefully absent from the menu. Although if you must, a request for heat will bring you and side of chili oil. The best eggroll I have ever had! Their Soup is legendary for its healing powers. Many head straight to the Rice Bowl the moment you feel a cold or fever coming on. Authentic Chow Mien, Fried Rice, Egg Fu Young to write home about! Favorites are the generous Sweet and Sour Chicken with a sauce NOT made from food coloring & corn syrup, but the combination of real pureed fruits and vinegars . Everything is homemade and hand cut.. Beef & Snow Pea’s, Chicken Subgum, Shrimp in Lobster Style Sauce, Beef Tenderloin with vegetables. The Lee family are the one and only owners. With no staff revolving in & out, the consistency of every dish and service is another welcome fact. Frank, Jean and Kenny are in the kitchen every day and night. Your wait staff have been there for more then 20 years. I have been coming to this place for nearly 40 years visiting from several times a week to several times a month. I almost don’t want to publish this review as tipping people off to this longtime gem of a restaurant will certainly make it harder for me to get a table. The Rice Bowl is everything you want in a no fuss completely original meal. BTW no liquor or soft drinks other then Pepsi is served. Sit back and enjoy a delicious cup of Oolong tea while you wait for an incredible clean tasting and homemade dinner. Lastly I am not an employee or owner, but I am deeply devoted to great food.
The very best Chinese food in the Des Moines area if you want unamericanized Chinese food. Egg fu yung is the best I have ever had. They do have your boring sesame chicken and other popular items however who wants that?
Rice bowl is fabulous! The service is wonderful, but the food is ultimate comfort. The wonton soup is the best ever! A neighborhood staple that always brings us back!
