Saddened. As a long time Dubuquer, I have always known Mario’s to be the best pizza and calzones. We ordered a large pizza Saturday night and picked it up.Upon getting it promptly home and began eating it, the crust was worse than shoe leather. The outer crust was uneatable. I will eat almost anything but when my mother-in-law said it was the worst she’s eaten I knew I was feeling the same way. She has been around almost 90 years. She has had a lot to compare it to. It was truly saddening. I hope this was a fluke.
Dbq Needs A Real Italian Rest!. It’s Italian but very bland, boring and overpriced for the quality. Locals don’t know any better and keep this joint in business but did I say how boring and bland it is. Mario needs to retire and sell to some new owners…preferably who come from Chicago where real Italian food is celebrated.
The Panz is the best dish, pass on the rest!
Wife and I decided to try this place after passing it many times. We should have kept on passing it. The food was not enjoyable at all. We ordered a pazerotti due to its ‘fame’ and were extremely disappointed. Only a few bites were taken and we tossed it aside. We also had a pizza which was not bad, but not worth returning for. I don’t feel like the prices are worth the quality of food you receive. The service was also not very great. It was no horrible, but what I’d expect from a kid at Chili’s and not an adult women at a family type establishment.
Some say it’s good but…. We were in town visiting friends and were told this was a great place for Italian. Next time we’ll pass. There was only one other couple there but it took about an hour for our food to arrive. I also wouldn’t rate this italian as good, marginal at best.
Mario’s is so great!. There’s no pretense to Mario’s. It’s an old-school Italian-American eatery. The food is good: well-prepared, nicely seasoned and simply presented. Their Sicilian salad is great, although the panzerotti — basically a fried calzone — is what they’re famous for. The panzerotti’s a bit much for me, but my husband loves them. I love the house red wine, a simple slightly sweet variety, as it reminds me of a home-vinted wine. The place is clean, the staff are friendly, and Mario himself is almost always there and will come by your table to make sure everything is OK. To sum up: I absolutely love Mario’s. It’s not remotely trendy, but it’s down-to-earth and just plain good.
Never had a bad meal. I have lived in Dubuque for all of my life and I have always loved Mario’s. The food is delicious and the service is timely. Often times you will even be greeted by Mario himself. The perfect hometown Italian eatery.
