An unhappy experience. Sumatra drip coffee took 10 minutes or so to arrive and we were the only customers there. The staff was so pseudo-intellectual-hipster it hurt. One of the staff members turned down his music as we walked in because we were walking into a symphony of Bon Iver or whatever we might have interrupted during normal business hours.It’s okay, I like indie folk, too.The food was good, the coffee terribly acidic.It was cold and NOT cozy at all. I was terribly unimpressed and may only go back to get food to go.
Localvore. Fair grounds is one of my favorite places in Iowa City. The breakfast burrito is amazing — it consistently amazes me that it is vegan… by far my favorite burrito of any sort in town. A couple of times the burrito has been a little cold inside, so could use a little more cooking, though is still good even in those situations. Waffles are wonderful. Would prefer fresh strawberries on waffles. Many of my friends appreciate their gluten free options.
All’s Fair at the Fair Grounds. Four words–Go for the Waffles. Waffles you say? I know, doesn’t sound like much until you take a gander at the 16 kinds of them (my favorite being The Arizona with apples and corn)–you got to try them. Caution, you may become a wafflaholic. Added pluses here for vegans as the menu is 100% vegan-friendly.If Fair Trade are your cup of tea (or coffee) Fair Grounds is all over it with organic and FT coffees. They also have great smoothies.
Vegan Waffles. With a specialty in Vegan and related foods, Fair Grounds still stays delicious. They serve a variety of waffles and such with options for vegan cheese and gluten free breads and waffles. The coffee is also mostly free and fair trade. The artwork often is the cliche 3rd rate work you’d expect from a coffee house but, they do their best to rotate something new in regularly. The space is large, the wifi is free, and the establishment is not cramped. With vegan food often associated with a dirty environment, this place bucks that trend and offers clean tables and fresh air.
