Charged a fee for unfinished food. I ate there today for the lunch buffet with a friend. We finished our food and I find out that I was charged $.50 for not completely finishing the food on my plate. I know this because the buffet was $9.99. My friends bill was $10.59 w/tax but mine was $11.12. I asked the old Indian gentleman about it and he told it it was a fee they charge for unfinished food. It was a single samosa that I had on my plate. He then showed me the menu for the cost of the samosa and told me I need to respect the food and not waste it. Basically, I was full, but had to FORCE myself to finish that single item of food so that I would not be charged that fee. I will NEVER be returning nor will I recommend to anyone. I also have the voided receipt as proof.
Maybe this just isn’t my cup of tea. I can’t find anything on the menu or buffet that keeps me coming back. I think the staff is really great and I like the location but I’m done trying. I give them a C.
I really like Masala! They have a great lunch buffet, thick cilantro chutney (yea!) and good dinner thalis. Good chai also. My in-laws are Indian and they like this place, too.
One potato, two potato, three potato. I ate here again this week and did want to make a few mores comments. I ordered the appetizer platter and all the fillings tasted exactly the same. Spiced potatoes. That was a let down. Also the waitress seemed to have no clue that the food was so spicy so we needed lots of water. In fact she continued to wipe down a table after I said I needed water. In typical Indian fashion she shook her head and laid me no mind! I will still eat here again but choose more wisely next time. MANGIA!28 Feb, 2012Pretty Good Tasty Indian Food. I must admit I was skeptical to try an Indian place so far from India but I was pleasantly surprised at the fare that was served. Everything did taste good for dinner and the portions were fair given the price. The kids actually said they would eat here again! Now that is a change given their other experiences in IC. I would recommend this unpretentious little hole in the wall to fill a sizable appetite. The other plus was that they had organic wine. Who knew? MANGIA!
Best Indian Food in Iowa City. I’ve been to Masala many times, and the only negative thing I can say about it is that I eat too much food when I’m there and can’t move afterwards. The lunch buffet is great – they have many options and it always tastes good. The staff is also excellent and very friendly. I recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if they have never tried Indian food before.
Formerly My Favorite Vegetarian. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Iowa City and my favorite vegetarian. The obvious changes are meat entrees and new seating. Ever since it’s overhaul, the food quality seems to have taken a nose dive. Also, the portions have gotten smaller, although it really isn’t a great loss. It is a disappointment, especially since I really enjoyed it before.
