I’ve had some rough experiences here; the bouncer to the concert entrance was once so rude he nearly left me in tears. However, the music nights are a great way to spend an evening. The food is good, standard pub food. Not bad
Rude service. My boyfriend and I went to the Mill hoping to have a fun night out to eat and listen to the live music that the Mill was featuring. We were told that we could find a seat in the back where the band was rehearsing because the front dinning room was full. We went into the back only to be yelled at by another employee. We explained the situation, and continued to be yelled at. We instant left and will not be going back to the Mill any time soon. Good communication and polite customer service are two things that the Mill staff clearly does not value.

The Mill is the place to be!. Pros:-:Music, events, or games almost every night of the week – Pub quiz and Open Mic at The Mill are Iowa City traditions!-:Daily food and drink specials. Including fresh soups and desserts!-:Vegetarian friendly! The black bean burger gets rave reviews all the time.-:Great food. Generous portions too, the nachos are always heapingly delicious.-:They deliver! Their entire menu at that! The pizza here beats most franchise options, but the rest of the menu offers a nice break in the monotony of a college town full of pizza places-:Beautiful patio space for summer dining-:Select board games and Pinball machines are always a fun way to pass the timeCons:-:As with any venue, the shows can be hit or miss depending on your taste, but it can get way too loud at times.-:New age restrictions on shows are a bummer too. Not their fault really, but still a nonplus-:When the place is busy the kitchen tends to really slow down. -:Limited parking that’s metered until 5, frequently blocked off by bands loading in and out makes it extra inconvenient This place gives off the dive bar appearance, but if you look closely there is a lot of history lining the walls of The Mill. From old musical instruments to autographed pictures of famous, and not so famous, acts that have played there over the years. Their menu describes their storied history as a cornerstone of Iowa City. It really is a beautiful location once you dig into it. The bar is a definite staple among many locals. They use local products bought from the farmer’s market, support local breweries and recycle everything they can. Offering members of the community a chance to show off their talents on stage, Open Mic has been a Mill tradition for decades. I’ve known many an organization to plan their meetings at The Mill because they have provided great community service and involvement for so many years. They host musical acts nearly every night of the week. Sometimes playing movies and they put on a really fun trivia night. There is also a front bar for those who would rather just socialize or drink. Two big TVs were recently added in the front too. The bar will put on most sporting matches or special events, even take requests for other shows as long as nothing major is going on. As with any college town, the service here depends on a seasonal crop of students. The service may vary with who is working, but they maintain a core of great servers and bartenders that are always excellent at their job. In the almost 10 years I’ve come to this place, I’ve never had a negative experience. The Mill is far and away the best place to be in Iowa City. Their drinks specials are perfect for poor college students on up to the rich doctors in town. The food is delicious, the drinks are stiff, and the music is wonderful. There really is something for everyone at this place!
Dive Bar. Came here when I was in Iowa City because of the good ratings on yelp, however, it’s a dive bar and not much more. The food is mediocre, like any bar food. However, I heard they have great live music, which I would really like to come back to check out.
Hard to describe…. We walked into the Mill not knowing what to expect – my boyfriend wanted pizza, and I wanted something a little lighter.I was struck by the smell of the restaurant first. It doesn’t exactly smell clean, and the interior could use a bit of an update. Next, we quickly found out that our waitress was less than friendly. We weren’t exactly sure what we had gotten ourselves into. But – then the food came and we were both impressed. We ordered the cheese bread which was simply delicious, and I had some sort of mediterranean sandwich was I enjoyed. Basically, the food is good but the service and atmosphere is not quite as enticing.
