I love this place. It’s a great place for me and my mommy friends to go while waiting for out little ballerinas to finish up rehearsals at the Englert. Fab wine and pizza yet low key. Staff is on it. Love u guys.

Excellent burgers. I would highly recommend this place. During the week, things are relaxed and you can have a conversation. It gets busier on the weekends, but the vibe is great. Check out this hidden Iowa City gem!

Bland food that didn’t live up to the prices. We were very disappointed with our experience at Moonrakers. The place was empty when our party of two arrived for dinner at about 6pm on December 26th. The chardonnay we received was flat, obviously from a bottle that had been open for a while. We ordered a burger and curry wrap, both with fries which were limp as soon as we received them. The burger was fine (it’s hard to botch organic beef on a house-made bun) but oversalted. The curry wrap, however, was essentially Spanish rice in a tortilla, lacking heavily in curry and virtually absent of vegetables (if there were any, perhaps they were minced and included in the tomato sauce). Simply put, it was not a proper curry and very disappointing. The place has a nice look overall, but this is hampered by glaring lights, muted big screen TVs, and high volume coming from the bar TV.Our service was efficient but cold. The menu specifically states that burgers are prepared as per the customer’s request, but I wasn’t asked how I wanted my burger. One could easily find a random establishment that provides better bar food than what we received here, or at least know to deliver crisp fries. Having both worked in food service, we know what we received was unacceptable. The bottom line: The quality didn’t live up to the prices. We would never go there again, or bother to try Hearth or One Twenty Six, which are at a higher price range.

Don’t eat here … Drink here they have happy hour probably to make up for the terrible cook. We had a sunny moonraker and a lamb burger and both were severely undercooked in the center. When the waiter saw that we had picked apart the burgers he said nothing didn’t ask if our food was good or if they could cook it more, just asked if we wanted the check. I don’t think our waiter was a jerk I think he had seen this issue before and thusly just tried to get us out the door.

Enjoyable experience. I came in expecting a good variety of beers and some quality pub food. This is more like an upscale eatery with a few pricey beers. It definitely captures a pub feel, but the beer selection is noneclectic and overpriced. All but one of the draft beers could be found, for much cheaper, at other places in town. The wine list is dizzyingly long, which is good and bad for some. The menu is minimal, both in scope and design, but the food is delightful. The curried broccoli soup was really great, full curry flavor in a smooth soup. The mussels were good but not great, sauce was pretty watery. Their chips are different, not quite firm but still sort of crispy. Unusual but good. The gnudi was pretty tasty, but not all that warm when it came out. The place is an interesting take on the idea of a gastropub, not exactly filling any voids in Iowa City though. Overall not blown away. I’d come back to try some fine wine or maybe a few other menu items. The beer just isn’t worth the price. Also the price category should definitely be $$ the gnudi was the cheapest entree at $18. I definitely got a lot of food for what I paid, but you’ll have to spend more than 20 bucks for a meal+tip here. Much more if you’re drinking. The service was spot on though. They definitely take care of you and have a lot of knowledge about what they serve. I originally wanted the gnocchi but they were out, the server was apologetic and totally sold me on the gnudi instead.

Quality Food for the Price. You cannot complain about the quality of the food here, nor the service. The menu offering is limited but then again it is a pub! However if you want Falafel to rival Oasis, eat them here, Delish. Also the Fish n Chips are HUGE portions for the price. Especially if you are there during Happy Hour. The beers are great and so are the mixed drinks. Perfect location for kids as they are in a clean atmosphere with tv’s around and bathrooms that are clean and a quick 5 minute walk from the library. Definitely eat here and become a regular as I have done. MANGIA!

Nice space, good selection. Have been here a half dozen times now. While I might enjoy a few more items on the menu (or a rotation of a plate or two on a regular basis) I can’t complain really. Food is well prepared, prices are good. I haven’t yet had one of the few high $ plates so I can’t comment on those. Beer selection is great, a little on the high end for pricing in this town. Happy Hour is 3-6pm, perfect for an afternoon drink and bite. Definitely check it out. The pork torta has nice spice, the chicken has great flavor that doesn’t overpower the guac. Burgers are good as well as the crab cake sandwich. The homemade chips are good, but not my fav. item there.
