The Amana Colonies are a national treasure, and the Ox Yoke is one of the bedrock establishments in this charming area. The food will never win a michelin star. No matter. This is family place, and a wonderful Sunday dinner any day of the week. Yet there are some things they do well in my opinion, namely all of their meat products. Hearty, excellent flavor, tender and moist. Homey sides compliment it all very nicely. And if you don’t think pickled beets sound good….try theirs. You’ll want them every day. It had been over 20 years since my last family-style meal here, and it’s great to know that it’s still the same high quality as it was then. These folks are professionals at what they do. I just wish I could hold my head up as I write this, and a nap is about to overtake me. And I don’t think I’m going to eat till next Tuesday. Dang I love this place…

It smelled gross just walking in the door, but we had reservations, and decided to stay. Our waitress was efficient, but not very personable. Our water was served without ice or straws. Our kids ordered grilled cheese and chips and didn’t care for either. The adults (five of us), had the family style meal. The food was fine, but not the great, down-home cooking we expected. For the price, we were all disappointed. We won’t be back.

Though tourist pricing is present, they have amazing bratwurst, Jger schnitzel and omg the pie crusts! They are firm, thin, flakey. We had the imported German beer and were not disappointed.

Worst service ever, passable food. Our server Dorothy was abominable. She was very hard of hearing forcing us to repeat our order as much as three times. You get the option of selecting either coleslaw, fruit, or their very own chips. I am not a big eater so all I wanted was the burger and fries that I ordered, nothing else. I didn’t see the point in wasting food. She argued with me. My fiance even told her all I want is just the burger fries. She seemed very put out that I didn’t want their sides and it took quite a while to get that through to her. After she took everyone elses order she pushed their chips on to me. Instead of causing a scene, which I would have if my soon to be in laws weren’t there, I said fine – I’ll take the chips. Our food arrives and the chips tasted burnt. I did not like them at all. I was right in not wanting them. The burger was something I could make on my own. There was nothing special about it. And she also put fries down for my fiance who did not order any. The cheesy spatzle was disgusting. They didn’t drain the water from it and just poured a cheese sauce it. The prices were astronomical for what we received. We will never go back.

Very disappointed. We went for dinner at 5:15 on the Thursday following Memorial Day. We were one of two tables in the restaurant the entire time we were there. Our table for two was placed next to a rowdy table for 8 which was odd since we had different waitresses and an entirely empty dining room. I had to move my chair each time a person got up to go to the restroom or when they left. The tables were so close together we couldn’t pass between the chairs. My husband ordered the rib dinner and I ordered the rib eye with creamy horseradish sauce since we heard the people at the table next to us complaining about tough weinerschnitzel, pork chops and spaetzel. (I don’t spell German words well, sorry.) My ribeye was ordered medium rare and came tough as shoe leather and very dry. My husband’s rib dinner crunched when he ate it because it was apparently overdone (yesterday’s, maybe?) Our teenage waitress never came back to our table after delivering our food except to give us our check which she brought before our food was delivered. Our water was never refilled, dessert was not offered, and we could hear her complaining in the kitchen about the fact that she couldn’t go home because she had a ___ table to wait for. Very disappointing visit. Poor food. Poor atmosphere. Poor waitstaff. We will never go back. And all for the low, low price of $41 (incl. 10% tip, I know, I know, but the service was pathetic) for two people with no drinks other than water.

BEST IN THE AMANA’S. I have never had a bad meal or bad service at the Ox Yoke. Their food is always top notch, they are by far the best restaurant in Amana. As the other reviews voiced, their deserts are very good. Both locations for this restaurant in Amana and just off of Interstate 80 are equally great to eat at.

Ox Yoke Inn. On my visits I’ve only ordered the family style service as part of a larger group and I’ve never left disappointed. The staff has always been courteous, while the food has been plentiful and delicious.Grade: B
