I was impressed by the atmosphere, service and knowledge of my bartender. Dining solo and at the bar as a visitor to the burg I was not expecting very much of the restaurant. Surprises are always pleasant.I depended on the bartender to assist me with my order and she suggested the calamari. I was praying not to see the same sad rings served most often across our fruited plain. This was not the case, and instead was served a very healthy portion of sliced squid steak with a savory crust. I also went for a spicy shrimp dish that was altogether sweet, crunchy and a nice amount of heat. Well played.I wanted to order all the entrees, but had not ordered beef in some time, so had the ribeye, which was grilled to my order – medium rare. Tender and smothered ala Oscar (crab and asparagus). If I could offer a single complaint it would be that there was too much crab, and this coming from a man who lives for dungeness. It overpowered the beef a bit, and I missed out on what I know was an amazing crust. (Take note chef, you were too generous.)I did not taste any desserts, took plenty home, and enjoyed the suggested wines during the night. I finished off with an extremely well made rye Old Fashioned at the behest of the bartender. I was so pleased to see a perfect craft cocktail in this tiny town that rivaled anything I may have had in New Orleans, Chicago, New York or Dallas.I would like to have seen their brunch, but they discontinued that service to give their employees time off (so said the owner who chatted me up playing perfect host). My dining neighbors were splendid and perfect conversationalists. What more could a weary traveler ask for?

Asked for a local restaurant that we would enjoy at the front desk of our hotel and they recommended Jilian’s. It was excellent! Certainly an unexpected gem in this declining community. We went on a Saturday evening. You may need reservations, we almost didn’t get a table. Dinner for 4 was about $135 with a cocktail and glass of wine. You can definitely spend less on some pasta choices if desired. Food, service and atmosphere were excellent.

Lunch at Jillian’s. Just had a fantastic lunch with this great customer! I had the turkey wrap with pasta salad. Delicious! I will certainly be back.

Best in Hutchinson? Says something about Hutchinson.. Count me as not impressed. Jillian’s is an attractive place to dine. The waiter who served us, Karley, was great. Friendly, accommodating, and efficient. But good service and ambiance is not the primary purpose of a restaurant. The food was less than mediocre. The wood fired oven pizza was soggy and not served hot. The crab cake appetizer was luke warm and served on a bed of canned creamed corn. What were they thinking?! There are better dining options in Hutchinson.

I honestly couldn’t write a review the first time I went because I didn’t want to write about a fluke of an experience. Because of the service I had, I felt the need to visit again. We went on a Friday evening without a reservation. This meant only their patio area was truly available. Typically, patio=mediocre service at best, but once again I was impressed by the wait staff. Our waiter addressed our needs and took care of us in a timely manner that felt very reasonable. The cheese platter served with flatbread was absolutely amazing for an appetizer. My fiance ordered a make your own pizza with pepperoni, mozzarella, cheddar, and marinara; I ordered the shrimp pizza. The crust on my pizza appeared to be slightly burnt and black on a small bit of the edge, but I ate half of my 12 inch entree. I am also not a big fan of thin crust pizza thanks to Pizza Hut, but Jillian’s gave me a new light and fall in love with such a concept. I will be back after I have my daughter who’s due to arrive in mid December so I have a chance to explore the wine list.
