I’ve visited on several occasions and find this bar to be very hit or miss. When they’re good I’ve had freshly prepared and artfully presented crudite and the coldest beer I’ve ever been served. When they’re bad they are inattentive, poorly supplied, or just grumpy about serving you. The menu is full of what I can only describe as fancy bar food. Few cooked items have been noteworthy. On the menu upside- items rotate on and off regularly. Five Bar has a lovely muted but modern atmosphere that utilizes elemental textures. It’s a comfortable place to drink and talk. It’s ALWAYS clean. They even have a notable bathroom – painted with chalkboard walls and supplied with a galvanized bucket of chalk, visitors are encouraged to share their thoughts with the other clientele using the unisex facility.Give it a try – maybe you’ll get lucky!
Divine Breakfast. Quiet and not crowded, I seated myself at a table. The regulars sat with their coffee and newspapers, a young couple with a baby in the corner chatted and ate, the college kids next to me finished their meals and took coffee to go. I ordered the Sweet Potato and Turkey Hash. I was presented with a fragrant bowl of orange sweet potato, turkey, mushroom, onion and red bell pepper stew adorned with a triangle of puff pastry. So savory and flavorful. The sweet potato melting around the edges of the tender turkey, the mushrooms, all perfectly balanced. I must see if I can figure out a recipe similar to this gorgeous and delicious stew.
Had the fondue, duck rolls, and carpaccio. Fondue was a gelatinous spicy muck accompanied by tri-color tortilla crisps; the duck rolls certainly did not contain any semblance of confit and the wrapping was conspicuously perfect–perhaps bought-in frozen perfect? The worst offender was the carpaccio–bland, without fresh pepper or oil, and served among a heap of greens drenched in vinaigrette. The food is completely void of technique and inspiration. Thankfully, we only paid happy hour prices.
