Mexican Taste at Salty IguanaSalty Iguana is a popular Mexican restaurant in the Kansas City area with a location in Lawrence. I decided to do my review on Salty Iguana because I have heard good things about it and have been wanting to try it. I also wanted to do my review on Salty Iguana because they are big sponsors of Kansas University Athletics. As soon as I walked in, I saw how much the owners like Kansas Athletics, especially basketball. They had iguanas wearing KU basketball jerseys painted on the walls. I found myself looking at all the iguanas painted with some sort of Kansas sport jersey on the wall while waiting for my dinner to come. I was really intrigued by the paintings of the iguanas on the wall and thought it was unique that they used the restaurants name as inspiration for the paintings. As I was looking around, I noticed something hanging from the ceiling and it was a mini replica of the video board in Allen Fieldhouse. I loved that part because I am a huge Kansas basketball fan and seeing that made me smile. As my friend and I walked in, we were seated right away at a 4 person table close to a TV. We both enjoyed sitting close to a TV because it had the Kansas City Royals game on and we are both Royals fans. Our waiter came over to us quickly and gave each of us a basket of chips and salsa. The chips were warm and fresh out of the kitchen. As the waiter gave us the chips and salsa, he also took our drink orders. Within just a few quick minutes he was back with the soda I ordered. After that, we sat there looking at the menu trying to decide what to get while simultaneously watching the Royals game. With quite a variety of options on the menu, it took a few minutes for both of us to decide what we were going to order. Salty Iguanas menu has normal Mexican fare, such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. After giving us some time to look over the menu, our waiter returned to take our order. He asked if we were ready and although we said yes, I had no idea what I was going to order. My friend ordered first and got a burrito and then it was my turn. I decided to order a chicken quesadilla. Although the chicken quesadilla came with ingredients like peppers and onions, I asked for only chicken and cheese. My friends and family consider me a picky eater, so I was anxious to see if the kitchen would make the quesadilla how I would like it. My friend and I sat there now waiting for our food and talking. As I continued to drink my soda, my waiter was already bringing me a refill. I really liked how my waiter took the initiative to come and refill my drink without me having to ask. To me, that shows he cares about the tables he is waiting on and wants them to have a good experience at the restaurant. Our food came out and my quesadilla was just how I ordered it. Being a picky eater, I always seem to change my order and am always curious to see if the kitchen would get it right. Most of the time they do, but being a new customer at this restaurant I wondered if they would be able to perfect it, and I was glad they did. The food was cooked and brought out in a timely manner. It only took about fifteen minutes after ordering before our hot dishes were sitting in front of us! Sometimes it can take restaurants up to an hour to get food to their customers. Our food was also aesthetically pleasing- strategically placed on the plate for a good appearance. As we got our food, we noticed we didnt have any silverware or napkins, so we quickly asked for some and our waiter came back right away with both and apologized for the delay. The silverware was wrapped in a paper napkin, but we had to ask for more. We both enjoyed what we ordered, but became full pretty quickly. Between the chips and salsa that were dissolved our appetite before we even got our food and how big of servings we got, we both became full pretty quickly. Neither my friend nor I was able to finish our dinners, but we both enjoyed what we ordered. My quesadilla was very reasonably priced, but I felt like the soda was a bit more expensive than usual.I enjoyed my experience at the Salty Iguana here in Lawrence and would definitely recommend it to my friends. I would like to go back there sometime soon as I really enjoyed the food and the service. Salty Iguana / *** / Mexican / $$ / 4931 W 6th St, Lawrence, KS 66049 / (785) 312-8100

No wonder this place isnt more popular, the food sucks. Salty wins the award for the WORST margarita in lawrence. This is not the place to go to enjoy chips and salsa as the salsa tastes like marinara sauce. With that said, the service is pretty good . The only option on the menu that makes someone want to come back is the iguana dip, but there are plenty of better spots in lawrence for a marg, chips and cheese dip. After our last meal, My girlfriend begged to never return . Scratch it off the list !!
I’m unsure why this restaurant isn’t liked by more people. It’s always consistently good, good service, large portions, all at a respectable price. A definate favorite of mine!30 Sep, 2012I’m unsure why this restaurant isn’t liked by more people. It’s us always consistently good, good service, large portions, all at a respectable price. Now that’s what I’m talking about… A Gold Margarita and a straw for the iguana dip and I’m happy!
Love the shrimp tacos, black beans and rice!
