Basil Leaf not only has fantastic food but an ever changing wine list. They have amazing dishes but if I were to narrow my selection to the perfect meal it would start with the Calamari, followed by the spaghetti and meatball (simplistic but perfection) and finish with the Tiramisu. The waitstaff has always provided topnotch hospitality and the bartender is quite charismatic. Basil Leaf is the go-to for an amazing meal, and a great atmosphere. Cheers!

Maybe most of this frustration comes from how much I loved the last menu and I can no longer think objectively, but hear me out. I moved to Lawrence from Brooklyn, NY about two months ago. A friend told me to try Basil Leaf after I complained that the Italian food in Kansas City was overrated. I admit to being both an Italian and an Italian food snob. Basil Leaf passed all the tests though: great bread, a great chicken cutlet, and very reasonable prices. The sandwich with a side of pasta for 13 bucks was a steal. The meatballs were not very good–but it’s Italian food in Lawrence, Kansas, no one is asking for perfection. Still, that cutlet sandwich was the bomb.com and I’ve had about five of them since living here. Last night I went for dinner with a friend. In addition to the menu INCREASING PRICES BY AT LEAST FOUR BUCKS ON EACH DISH. There were some truly curious additions. popcorn rice cake shrimp and grits? chicken tenders with lemon sauce for $18??? Basil Leaf’s new menu is an abomination, legitimately. Go anywhere else in town.
