Loved our Tuesday night dinner. Get the Barrel Aged Boulevardier. Often, when you ask servers what they recommend on a menu, they’ll start by telling you what the popular dishes are that people normally get. We usually stop them at this point and ask what THEY like, not what’s popular. You’ll often be steered towards something you might not have chosen otherwise. (NOTE: Only with experienced servers, not with those learning the ropes). It’s a bit of a gamble and it doesn’t always pay off, but the majority of the time, you’ll end up with something really good. That was our experience last night when we ended up with the pork shank and the rainbow trout, and not the fried chicken, stroganoff, etc. that others are mentioning in their reviews. We went on a cold Tuesday night, which meant we were immediately seated, but the restaurant was still fairly full and had a good energy. Yes, it’s pricey. A $7 side is not something I’d order on an everyday basis, but we were there for a celebration. We had 2 non-steak entrees, the whipped goat cheese appetizer, the brussels sprout side, a wine and 2 FANTASTIC cocktails (Barrel Aged Boulevardier is something I’ll now be dreaming about) and our total check was just a little north of $100. Not something we’d do every night, but we felt like our dinner last night was totally worth it.
Uneatable!. I had the Beef Stroganoff. There was a huge chunk of meat in the middle of a bowl of dry, sticky noodles. There was no sauce, no sour cream and large slices of onion – awful! The meat was so tough it could not be cut but shredded apart and then it was hard to chew. My dinner companion had the Shrimp and grits and there was so much liquid (sauce) on her plate that it was hard to distinguish what was what. The cornbread muffins were so dry and crumbly that I wore more on my blouse than I got in my mouth. The only good part of the meal were the salads, Caesar and Bibb. The first time I went to Rye we had to return a meat dish to the kitchen because it was so dried out. Both of these times were special occasions and we expected better. I will always give a restaurant a second chance because everyone can have a bad day but this is my second and LAST time I will eat at this restaurant and I would not suggest it to any of my friends.
Pay no attention to the wildlife.. Pay no attention to the Wildlife, posting crazy reviews about cheap silverware, or bland pickles. Sometime you just have to read between the lines. Went there twice in two weeks Service was Exemplary, and food was great. Sometime people need to complain because nobody wiped there but on the way out the door. Winner of a James Beard Award should say something.21 Oct, 2014Does Not Disappoint!. I tired Rye, after the recommendation from a friend, and it was a very enjoyable dining experience. Extremely good hand crafted Cocktails, and great service! Shrimp & Grit’s were exceptional. Hot Mulled Wine was an excellent Aperitif, by the fire on a chilly fall evening. I will be returning again, and again.
Not That Impressed!. My husband and I went there for an early dinner to celebrate my birthday. I had read so many positive reviews on this restaurant that I put it on my list of restaurants I wanted to try. Ordered a salad, which was good, and thefried chicken which they are supposed to be famous for. Well…I’ll take RC’s or Stroud’s chicken any day over the chicken at Rye. It wasn’t that it was bad, it just lacked flavor. And who puts ham gravy with fried chicken? Also, their homemade pickles tasted blando–like maybe sliced cucumbers and onion in water with a drop of vinegar.I will now delete this place as a go back to restaurant. Sorry, just didn’t do it for us. The service was good though.
Never fails me!. Everything about Rye is fantastic. Food, service, ambiance. I dream about their Whipped Goat cheese appetizer and fried chicken. I would highly recommend!
Reliable Rye. I choose Rye again and again for a menu that is imaginative, delicious, and a great way to show off Kansas City when guests come to town – good old fried chicken but more sophisticated, deep red beets with just the right crunch and tingle, delicate trout with fresh green beans, exquisite steak. It’s fun to watch the staff making it all happen in the open kitchen. Service could not be more professional. My only complaint, too noisy.
Good food, rushed atmosphere. The food here is quite good but the atmosphere is rushed; not a place to tarry over a relaxed glass of wine. I am not sure we will be back.
