My family has been going to Lupes for the better part of 20 yrs for their chile quesadillas which are amazing! This last time we went the quesadillas shrunk an cost nearly $5 a piece now! Needless to say we wont be returning. Sad day.
Expensive, Bad. The person behind the counter, who I assume was the owner, was rude and seemed very annoyed with me for wanting a vegetarian burrito at a Mexican restaurant. The burrito I eventually got was canned beans on a store-bought tortilla with phony cheese and shredded lettuce and tomato. The basic burrito cost $4.10 (for canned beans and phony cheese (you-know, the really cheap kind that is mostly water, not milk)), but with the tomato and lettuce (which cost extra), it came to nearly $7.00!!!!!!!!!!! Really, this was bad stuff. Don’t eat here. Take your money anywhere else or buy a can of beans and make this at home–it’s guaranteed to be better.
Good, but…. This place is SO expensive for a little carry-out shop. I’ve been coming here for the last 20 years or so and the smothered burritos and tacos are fantastic. But I swear every time I walk through the door the prices have gone up. If you’re a big hungry guy like me and you want a burrito and two tacos it’s gonna cost you over ten bucks. Oh, and its alla cart, so that five dollar+ burrito doesn’t come with beans or rice either. It also drives me crazy the hours they keep. Closed on the weekends? They close early every night, even on Fridays, so if you’re working late you might be out of luck. Anyway, the food is pretty good but keep in mind that when my wife and I go here we can spend well over $20 just for the two of us. That’s probably not bad at a casual restaurant, but this is picking up food from a counter in a styrofoam box and eating it with a plastic fork. Picking up food for the whole family? Better bring a loaded wallet. But at least the food is good. All that said, Lupe’s is a Newton institution and worth trying if you’ve never been. I’d eat here all the time if the prices were in line.
