Not so homey feel for me. Yesterday I went to Old 56 Hwy diner for lunch. It is pretty close to my work, so it wasnt my first time, but it will be my last time. The food is typical diner food and not too bad and the service is usually Ok, Except for the casher who is painfully non-chalant. My food came quickly and was just as I ordered it, but while I was eating I had a sudden loss of appetite. There were two older white gentlemen sitting at the table next to me, they were obviously regulars as they referred to the waitresses by name and the waitress called them by name and was interactive with them. As they prepared to leave the waitress took their payment to the register for them and left to do something. While they waited one guy said to the other guy whos back was to the door Oh no, I just saw a Black guy take your credit card and run out the door the other laughed and said a Black guy took my credit card?! Then the waitress came and they told her a Black guy took his credit card and they continued joking about it until she went and got their bill and they left. I would have expected the waitress, who is the same one that served me, to realize this was offensive to me, her other customer, who is Black and not two feet away and ask them to stop but no she joked along with them. My first thought was to leave but I realized that such ignorance is unavoidable and there is really no getting away from it. The waitress continued to serve me as if nothing happened. Guess it didnt register at all with her. I decided to leave a tip anyway until I got to the counter and stood there forever waiting on the cashier to come even after my waitress told her I was waiting. She came took my credit card, rang it up, laid the receipt and pen in front of me and walked away as I started to sign it. I had first filled in a tip but after she walked away I changed my mind and put a line through it signed and left. So much for the homey feel . . .
First time visit…I’ll be back. Quaint, clean, friendly atmosphere with a small town charm. My two egg breakfast hit the spot with hash browns, sausage patties, and wheat toast! Everything was prepared well, arrived quickly, and was appropriately priced. I’d like to give lunch a try too.
Pre frozen chicken patties and gravy from a package, no thanks.
Great comfortable atmosphere. The waitresses are kind and sweet. Food arrived quickly. Standard diner food.
Great Old School Diner. I have been going to the Old 56 Diner, since it was Waid’s, before it was sold. One of my curent favorites is the Egg’s Benidict Specal on thursday’s. Biscut’s and Gravey, and the 3 Egg Omlet Selection’s are a good if you find yourself there other that Thursday. The servers are frendly, and prompt, but Sunday’s are very buisy.
Wednesday night special – note. Beef brisket instead of baked chicken during the warm months04 Apr, 2011Sat/sun morning breakfast special. Two eggs, hash browns, half a slice of ham, 2 strips of bacon and 1 sausage patty at a discounted price. Price goes up $1 after 11. Not available the rest of the week unless you pay for additional items28 Mar, 2011Hash and eggs (Friday breakfast special). This is only on the menu for Friday breakfast but the cashier told us that it’s available at other times by ordering the #10 (ham and eggs) and asking for hash to be substituted for the ham28 Mar, 2011Fried chicken (Sunday only). They did a very nice job with a lunch sized portion (2 pieces), mashed potatoes with white gravy, and a side dish (this time mixed vegetables). the only problems I had were the the waitress, who was easily distracted and ignored her tables, and the doorways be jammed with old people. Waitress service quality varies, apparently. other times the service has been much better.19 Mar, 2011Knott’s Berry Farm Jellies. Standard issue jellies for the table are apple/cinnamon, grape, strawberry jam, and orange marmalade, all made Knott’s Berry Farm brand
Wonderful wait staff and a comfortable homey atmosphere. Good food served quickly. Best coffee hands down.
