I had never had African food before so I have nothing to compare this to. But I was shocked how much I liked the food. It had lots of spices but without the heat that you get from Thai or Indian food. I got the chicken dish and a side of sauted cabbage and fried plantains. I plan to go back quite a bit. The prices were very reasonable and the service was excellent.
The food here is great and is slightly different than the ubiquitous african cuisine of Ethiopian food. Unlike Ethiopian food, stews do not need be eaten with you hands, although you may with corn based fufu (ugali). It’s a bit messier to do this but the fufu compliments the food well and is filling. Also, not all entrees and sides are stewed like Ethiopian food. My wife had the goat stew (which she loved) and I had the stewed chicken with tomato coconut sauce (which was amazing). Service is good but have patience with the food prep, it takes a bit.

Love at first bite. Visited Taste of Africa for a birthday dinner. Wow! The service was personable and friendly without being overbearing. The food was authentic and absolutely amazing. Can’t wait to go back!
A much welcomed addition to Johnson county’s culinary landscape. My goat stew, served with corn mush and plantains was excellent. Those of us that complain about the ethnically sterile restaurant scene in this part of town need to support these small enclaves of diverse tastes…show up or shut up! Back now to my goat before it gets cold….
Authentic East African food. If you want really tasty authentic East African food, then this is the place to find it in KC. But as with all authentic ethnic food restaurants, you cannot expect a fast meal. If you have time to relax and enjoy conversation, then come try some of the unique and delicious foods they serve at Taste of Africa. Since we had traveled in Tanzania several years ago, many of the foods were familiar to us and all of them tasted as good as we remembered.We each got a platter so we could try two entrees and several side dishes. I had the tilapia – the whole fish including the head – and it was seasoned and cooked very well. The sauce they served with it was fantastic, kind of a coconut curry. All of the sides were wonderful – kale, cabbage and a slaw with cilantro. The meals came with rice or ugali, the traditional East African corn mush that is used in Tanzania as a utensil to pick up the other foods. Oh, and chapati flat bread, too! We drank unsweetened chai tea and even had some fried plantains for dessert.The prices are very reasonable, and the owner told us that she hopes to add more foods to the menu so it will represent all kinds of African cuisine. Kansas City has become known for all our wonderful ethnic foods that are available here. I really hope people will support this local restaurant and keep it in business so we have African food available as another world cuisine in KC!
