Having ate at the original Gus’s in Memphis years ago we were anxious to try this new one. Had the 3 – piece plate with beans and slaw. Chicken has a nice spicy flavor without a heavy crunchy coating. Beans were BBQ style – mildly tangy and sweet. Slaw was slightly sweet and cream based. Chess pie for dessert – it had been warmed for service, the pie crust was flaky while the filling had a light sugar crust across the top. Very good. Service inside the restaurant was very good and attentive. We’ll be going back.
Heard about this place awhile back from one of my Flight Attendant friends was told I needed to try it ASAP. At the time, there wasn’t a location in Kansas City. I’ve been anticipating it, and was pretty satisfied with the experience. The chicken is nicely seasoned, with a slight spicy kick. The baked beans were good, as was the slaw. We tried the fried pickles and fried green tomatoes, both were as expected, decent. The barnyard picnic feel was a bit strange, but comfortable. Plastic cups, utensils, and foam plates is what you get when dining in, odd, but we adjusted to the very very relaxed atmosphere quickly. We will definitely be returning soon!
