We have enjoyed le monde for many years from their sweet biscuits to their yummy gyro’s. unfortunately the last couple of times we visited the biscuits have been hard and no longer sweet. They taste like over baked bisquick now. Tonight I had a gyro and the meat was so salty I couldn’t eat it.
Not bad, but not a hero gyro. I’ll admit, I had somewhat high expectations for Le Monde before I ever got the chance to try the place. Some of my family and a couple of friends are fans, and talked up dishes they have tried. Their recommendation, combined with the generally positive reviews and my affinity for Mediterranean diners such as Niko Niko’s in Houston, may have set the bar a tad unfairly too high. Dining alone at lunch time, I was seated in a corner of the restaurant. As we made our way to the table, before being seated or seeing a menu, the seemingly harried waitress asked if I’d like more than just water to drink. I responded that a water would be fine, and it was to my benefit: I wouldn’t see a refill or much of the wait staff on this trip. A quick glance over the menu later, the waitress returned with my drink and a pair of famed complimentary biscuits. I promptly crunched into one, noting a slight sweetness of honey and touch of salt. To my dismay, my biscuits were quite dry, leaning toward stale, and hardening rapidly. I would imagine they’re just fine as complimentary fare when they’re fresh, but they were nothing to rave about from this tasting. For my meal, a Greek Gyro with potato wedges served alongside was the target. Having put many a gyro to rest, ranking Le Monde’s wrapped sandwich was the objective. When it arrived, the unmistakable scent of spiced beef wafted from the plate, signaling to my stomach that it was go time. Testing the potato wedges, which appeared to be the common seasoned wedge of the supermarket freezer section, revealed…that they were just as such. No matter, I thought to myself, the wedge was not meant to be the star of the dish anyway. A good gyro has a myriad of interesting flavor and texture profiles to fulfill, and Le Monde’s rendition hit a majority of the marks. The meat was absolutely fantastic: slow cooked with just the right blend of spices, well seasoned so the natural flavors of the meat were accentuated, juicy and shaved into thick, tender strips. A cool tzatziki sauce complimented the savory notes of the spiced meat. The yogurt sauce’s lightly sweet blend of dill and garlic added punch, and a cucumber, red onion, tomato vegetable trio rounded things out with a crisp crunch and welcome freshness. The only miss was in the pita bread, which was dry, lacking any of its own flavor, and cool and stiff rather than warm, soft, and pliable. As a whole the gyro comes out above average, and is a steal with a price tag that a fast food burger combo can’t beat. Le Monde itself falls to middle of the pack, a so-so cafe with average breads and accompaniments, and less than stellar service but some bright spots in its treatment of proteins and sauces.
Gyro and Fattoush Salad. I came in for lunch and ordered the Gyro & Fattoush Salad it was made promptly The Meal was awesome, very affordable and fresh!! I really enjoyed the salad, it was full of different flavors. Next time I’ll eat in, the atmosphere seemed cozy.
Yum. It was a busy place around noon but the food and the prices were worth the small wait!!
10/10 would bang
Great food. I like their pastas, and they have a great, virtually every one being yumo. This is one of the few restaurants where almost everything on the menu is something I would order.
Le Monde :). Great food, great atmosphere. The bread they give you when you sit down is one of a kind, i want the recipe. The soups are great, it is worth it to get the fattoushe (sp) with a soup and chicken ontop. I love this place, too bad so many other people do too because it is always packed. Holidays are a no go unless you call ahead or are willing to wait. They have a great valentines day special, i hope to bring my special someone there next time. i found their desserts some where else, i wont say where, but it is still a good price and great tasting.
