Gluten Free Cupcakes, Finally!. Babycakes Cupcakes is the only bakery in town that I found has gluten free cupcakes, and believe me, I was excited to try them! I got a carrot cake, a caramel, and a blueberry cupcake (I couldn’t try just one due to my excitement). My overall impression? The cupcakes are darn good! The icing was a little on the sweet side for me, but that’s personal preference. As far as each individual flavor, the carrot cake was my favorite. It had carrot throughout the cake and had good notes of spice in it. The blueberry, while not chock full of berries, had enough blueberries in it that it was moist and wasn’t all cake. I was slightly disappointed by the caramel cake though. Caramel cake is my favorite of all cakes, and I felt it lacked on the caramel. It was a good cake, but it tasted more like a yellow cake with just a little caramel in it, if that makes sense. The woman working, I assume the owner, was sweet and helpful and didn’t hesitate to help us as soon as possible. At the prices offered, I will definetly be returning to this place to enjoy more gluten free cupcakes. Thank you for being the only place in town that offers something for us who suffer with celiac disease!
Ordered 8 different flavors of mini cupcakes for a party. 2 of the flavors were mint julep and also and orange champagne. They both had quite a strong odor and instead of putting them together, they put them mixed with other flavors and made EVERYTHING taste either minty or orangey. We were all really disappointed. We spent quite a bit on cupcakes to have lots of flavors only to be disappointed by them all being overcome by the other flavors. In the future, put pungent flavored cupcakes together and away from lighter flavors so they stay good.
Uh..no. Agree with most reviews. Cupcakes are tastless and too dense and well…just not that great. I would really like to support a local, homemade bakery, but, I could make a better one from a box and I am not that great of a cook even. Went there during happy hour and the person behind the counter did not look up as I entered and didn’t greet me ( I was the only one there). I needed nine cupcakes but she said only six can be purchased during happy hour. I am not a business owner but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. You have a customer that has cash they are willing to give you for your product that you may or may not sell in the next hour and you refuse to sell that product to them over the amount of six? My friend said I should have asked them if I had walked in five minutes before close and offer to buy every cupcake left would they still just rather abide by the six cupcake limit and trash the rest or sell them? Makes for a great argument. Also, wish I would have grabbed some random stranger and said here’s some cash if you don’t mind grabbing me six more cupcakes…that’s all they sell at a time during happy hour (some people do not get out of work until this time). They should be happy anyone is buying their cupcakes at all because they are not flavorful in the least. Bad attitudes, crappy cupcakes, and ridiculous happy hour rules. Will not return.
Great Vegan Cupcake!. My mom’s birthday dessert is difficult to choose because my sister is Vegan and my mom and I are not. One great solution was to get a few of their regular cupcakes and some of the vegan ones….plus our two dogs also got cupcakes! The Vegan cupcakes…chocolate and vanilla….were really really good. It is a great local dessert option.
Best. Cupcakes. Ever. I don’t even like cupcakes that much, and I think these are delicious.
Good variety and independent. BabyCakes Cupcakes opened in spring 2009 in Patchen, and moved next door to The Lunch Box this spring. They were Lexington’s first cupcakery, although other bakeries in town such as Caramanda’s and Brown’s have featured cupcakes prominently since the national craze began a few years ago. Hot chocolate cupcake tasted lighter than regular chocolate, and tasted as if they actually used real hot chocolate powder in the mix. Chai tea cupcake was really spice cake, which is always a nostalgic feel-good taste of lunchladyland yesteryear. Strawberry was a dud, as it didn’t have any real strawberry taste or presence of strawberry inside the cupcake. Red velvet is decent. Coconut is pretty good, with a decent coconut and amaretto taste. BabyCakes best features are a good variety of flavors daily, creativity, and reasonable pricing at $2/cupcake with $1 happy hour pricing near closing time Tues-Thurs.
I really like the variety of Flavors they offer. I like trying a different one each time I go. My fave is the white chocolate raspberry 🙂 They also have a better butter cream icing than other places! AND, it is proportionate to the cupcake. I appreciate the fact that they aren’t all icing, unlike other stores in the area.
