Yep, it’s a dive….. Good burgers. Onion rings are very good as well. Not overly breaded.Chili has a good flavor. Makes a very good topping for the chili cheese fries.Owned by the Stella’s Deli people. Do not be afraid! Give it a try!
Very Disappointed!. This bar is obviously a dive bar, which is fine, but people constantly going in and out the door leading to the deck, obnoxiously allowing in copious amounts of second hand smoke had me saying I would never return. I returned a month later only to watch my brother’s band play, and not one but two bartenders were immediately very rude and condescending to me, even laughing in my face. I overheard several others in the crowd complain about the bartenders ignoring them, and being very rude to them as well. If you want to keep a decent name, I’d suggest having your bartenders properly trained so they know what the hell they’re talking about, and have them take a class in human relations.
Visited Al’s bar for the first time on 6/9/12 because all reviews said that the food was great and music was good. It was really the opposite and very disappointing. We ordered two burgers with onion rings…the burgers came and they were overdone and dry….we sent them back….they brought out two more burgers….same result and no more onion rings. They stated they had run out of onion rings and the nightly crowd had not even arrived yet. So in total four burgers came out ruined. The service was the only thing that was very good as the bartender who was also the server was very nice. However we will not be going there again….very disappointing.
Funky and great hangout.. If you long for a funky hang out place where the prices are great, then Al’s bar is right up your alley. Al’s bar, located in a funky neighborhood has transformed this neighborhood to a very vibrant corner. They feature a lot of live entertainment and poetry readings as well as providing a location for neighborhood meetings. This is what people would call a Great Neighbor and many neighborhoods probably they had one like this. It is a great place to just pop in for a burger and beer. The burgers are great and the sweet potato fries are awesome. Music nights are usually crowded with many standing room only, but hey, the atmosphere is great. Word has long gotten out and now we see suburbanites trekking to this location for the atmosphere and entertainment.I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
Sustainable bar food. Al’s is a bar that usually has a live band, and very often it’s a big show with lots of people. Which makes it a terrific and unlikely surprise that it has some of the best food in town. Owned by the same people as Stella’s, they use as much produce as they can from the community garden. Excellent burgers including local beef, lamb, local bison, black bean (best in town), portabello, and falafel. The sweet potato fries are everyone’s favorite. Al’s is an important part of the north-side community and I’m probably as relaxed eating here as I am eating at my mother’s house.
