Great Meal. I went years ago with clients from LA, who had read about Lilly’s in a gourmet magazine. The dinner was excellent and my friends really enjoyed their meals. But I recently have been hearing that food quality and service is going down–I really hope this is not true. I highly recommend.

Lilly’s is consistently excellent. The food changes with the seasons – as it should – and highlights Kentucky’s farmers alongside local tastes. The old favorites are always pleasant but there’s always something new to try. Service is present but not intrusive – sometimes they have recommended things based on past choices which is a sweet surprise – and unexpected since I don’t go regularly. The menu has things for different price points and lunch is a great deal. I hope this staple of the Louisville dining scene is around for many years to come.

Delicious Lunch. Start to finish: slightly condescending aura, which may be since we were very casually dressed, but once we had received and tolerated well the pretentious head-to-toe assessment, everyone was lovely to us. I had the most delicious grits and fried oysters I have ever had in my life, and the white wine suggested by our waiter was incredibly good. It is a pricey lunch, if you were expecting chain-restaurant prices; but we knew what to expect, and were well satisfied. Not huge portions, but certainly enough to satisfy. Would be happy to eat here again! Parking on the challenging side, as there are not many spaces available!

Very Disappointed. We chose Lilly’s for our 20th anniversary dinner and were disappointed. We’ve eaten there before for special dinners and thought her great press was justified in past years. But this time (May 30, 2013) – the food wasn’t worth it. My husband and I struggled to find appetizers and entrees that excited us. He finally settled on the beet salad appetizer and I had the crabcakes. The one Merlot selection by the glass was strong with a lot of tannins. (There is a growing Kentucky winery industry and not a one is represented here.) Good food presentation on the appetizers but forgettable in taste. I then ordered the pasta special (had chicken & spinach in it) while my husband got the burger & fries. A couple of tastes of the pasta and I knew I would be drinking water all night. In fact, I couldn’t eat it. It wasn’t horrible, but it also wasn’t good. I told the waiter and got a sympathetic face. Later the busboy came out and offered to box it up. We didn’t want to cause a stir so we just said yes (and threw it out when we got home.) No further inquiry from the waiter. My husband’s burger was a mere O.k. Lilly’s has photos of the owner with Julia Child, and other equivalent press in the restroom area. That seems true of the past, but not of the current iteration. We won’t be back.

Not worth it. We were very disappointed in Lilys. I have wanted to go here for years, but I think this restaurant has passed its prime. It won awards up until 2006 but clearly no longer lives up to the hype. We each ordered appetizers, salads, main courses and desserts. All four of us were underwhelmed. The only bright point was the service, which was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. My husband paid $36 for a steak that was so heavily seasoned he could hardly eat it. At these prices, at least one dish (out of 16 total) should knock your sock off. The food was just OK, and at $60+ per person, we wont be back.

Go for lunch. Way too expensive at night – lunch is the deal! But they need consistency: a lunch in September was excellent from soup to dessert. Lunch in October a different story. Not the same. Couldn’t wait to have the bibb salad with pecan pie vinagarette again – could drink it with a straw! But salad dressing was so scarce. We waited & waited for our lunch entrees. Finally told that the sandwich press had not been heated properly! Well who was in charge back in the kitchen? When food finally came out the grilled sandwich was delicious but the fish & chips were awful! The fish was greasy & looked like something from fast food – on a bad day! One of us ate & the other had to wait for a replacement meal. Nothing was offered to us in way of compensation – just more bread. I was afraid to drink my water after witnessing the guy who refilled the water touching the pitcher to everyone’s glass. Time to pay the bill & it was another lengthy wait so no dessert this time.
