Please don’t waste your time or your money. One of the worst places my boyfriend and I have ever eaten at. The waitresses were more concerned with impressing the tables full of gentleman, than waiting on their customers. Food made us both, my boyfriend and I, sick. Horrible.
Well coming from Tennessee with my mother I decided to go off the beaten path and stop in here for the buffet. Kind of overwhelming with the number of choices there have. Ribs, chicken, Sutton, pulled pork, side dishes of various sorts and constantly busy. It was actually Mother’s Day when we stopped in. Definitely would be back and I enjoyed it
Lots of food. Lots of choices, nice place good service. I had a business lunch here I the recommendation of the locals. I must be spoiled, within a 100 miles of the house there’s three Memphis in May Champions and one Grand Champion. So I’m spoiled here and will not use this as a judgment on Moonlite lots of food place. I mean lots of food.
So this place is supposed to be the best BBQ around. Well, it’s not. It’s mostly heavily sauced and tastes a lot like the BBQ you can find in the meat section of the grocery store in the plastic tubs. The veggies on the buffet were obviously from a can, and the desserts were fair, at best. But worst of all, the place was filthy. When we were seated, our table looked like the previous diners for the day had dumped their plates under the table. The man who seated us asked if we wanted it cleaned up or would that be okay? If you have to ask . . . .
I have worked at bbq restaurants when I was younger and have been smoking meat for 20+ years and I have to say that Moonlight has the best bbq in the area. My only complaint about the meat is that they don’t know how to cook ribs. They don’t remove the membrane from the back, they over cook them and they cut them on a band saw usually through the bone instead of between the bones. Other than that every thing else that they serve is great. The buffet is the best in town, hands down. The side dishes are just as tasty as the meat which is usually my problem. I fill up on the sides and don’t get to eat as much meat. They have a great dessert bar full of homemade pies and puddings but you will never get to taste them. You will be too stuffed before you get that far. Tip, go there for the Sunday buffet because it always has turkey and dressing that puts my grandmas to shame.
Moonlight is something everyone will tell you that you must try, as a owensboro resident I can tell you there is alot of hype and not much delivery. Everything is bland and expensive. I only go here for the burgoo. If your a mutton fan, this is not the place to be.
I’ve been to Moonlite many times over the years, but the older I get the less I like it. You can’t beat the selection of meats, sides and desserts, but the quality seems to have slipped. If you are from out of town it is definitely a must visit, at least once. I can’t believe how many reviewers ordered off the menu to save a couple of dollars. If you traveled to owensboro to try this place, you have to get the buffet. The highlight of the buffet is the burgoo and corn muffins. I’m sure I will be back again at some point, but I now agree with the Owensboro experts – Moonlite is for tourists, but the locals are eating at Old Hickory.
