We were seated on the spacious screen porch which was welcome after first being led to a row of two-seater tables that were so jammed together you could literally rub elbows with strangers. But it all went uphill from there. We had appetizers of pork rinds and olive toast, which were both very good. House-made pork rinds seem to be the latest fad, but that’s OK with us. My wife ordered the sweet tea brined chicken and I opted for the braised pork shoulder. Both were excellent. This is definitely a do-again.
Great food! Friendly service! We felt lucky to find this amazingly fresh food. We will be back on our next visit to Kentucky. Fish Ian’s Pork were cooked perfectly.
Our group of eating-out friends tried the Freight House finally. The interior was beautiful and hip, albeit somewhat noisy. We started with the appetizers (salad is considered an appetizer, so you pay extra) and ordered the beer cheese (fair), a salad (really good), pork rinds (good), the beet salad (interesting), and mussels (should be an entree they were so good!) Our dinners were really good as well. The shrimp and grits was tomato-based, but with a good spiciness. The pork was very well-cooked, albeit a bit bland, but it melted in your mouth. This dish came with black-eyed peas (decent) and the best sweet greens I’ve ever had. Both types of steak were ordered, and they were both tender and well-cooked, but we were told that the Riverside steak at 18 ounces for $45 could feed two. I think their weight scale is a bit broken because that steak MAY have been 8 -10 ounces at best. The hit of the night though was the burger, sweet and savory. I’d come back just for the burger alone. Desserts were also ordered, bourbon apple pie and the bourbon chocolate chip and bacon cookies. Yes, bacon. And they were great! The bar also has an excellent selection of craft beers and whiskeys, although a sampler would be a great item to include on the menu. The only complaint was the noise level. Very very loud. Desperately needs some sound absorbing baffles. And it is rather pricey for some entrees. At these prices, a salad should be included. And they did NOT SERVE SWEET TEA. Wow. What restaurant here in Kentucky DOES NOT serve sweet tea?? Know thy customer! All in all, we’ll visit again though.
