I’m a huge BBQ fan and have eaten BBQ in a lot of the big cities for it. SFTBBQ is a solid entry in the BBQ market, especially for Richmond, but not exceptional. As with most places, some meats are much better than others. We got there around 5 PM on a rainy day and got the sampler, four meats and 2 sides. They were out of tortillas, so we got buns. The brisket was well smoked and had a good flavor, but was dry, dry, dry. So dry. The pulled pork and ribs were quite good, but the chicken was so overcooked that it was mushy; it had very little texture at all. We got the green beans and the cowboy beans. The cowboy beans tasted like they came straight from a can. The green beans were seasoned with some salt and pork fat, but largely unexceptional. I’m assuming we just got them on a bad day, based on what I’m seeing from other reviews. We’ll have to try them again sometime.
Loved it!. Top-notch brisket. So flavorful it didn’t even need of the delicious homemade BBQ sauce!
Just a great place…. This place is just great. I was hesitant to stop for some time but finally stopped by right at closing one night to grab a menu. Ended up talking to the owner and grabbing some food. Wife and I loved it and now make it a regular stop. The owner is a great character and knows how to cook. The food is fantastic. Every thing I have tried so far has been just great. The atmosphere is simple and pleasant. Most BBQ places tend to rub me the wrong way. They seem to want to over do everything and it tends to make the food too busy in my opinion. This is especially true to sauce. These guys let the meat do the talking, and just let the smoke and simple flavors help. The sauce is homemade and offered on the side and it is good, but it is complimentary in flavor and not overly strong, a grave difference to most restaurant BBQ sauce I have tried. I have only tried their sweet sauce, although they do offer spicy. I am a BBQ cook myself, and talking to these guys I have actually learned some tricks and tips I have never heard before. They know what they are doing. If you like BBQ, no reason to go anywhere else. Hell I just drive by for the smell if I am not hungry.

Texas Approved. I am originally from Texas, and have eaten a lot of Texas BBQ. I have eaten at some of the places Texas monthly rank as the best BBQ places. I have also been to state wide BBQ competitions. I believe that the proprietors of Straight From Texas Bar-B-Que not only my favorite restaurant in Richmond, I also feel they could win state-wide competitions if they were back competing in Texas.I have had their Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken. The dry rub they use is both authentic and tasty. Their Greens, green beans, and ranch style beans are authentic. However the hidden secret their is there Tortillas (say it correctly Tore-Tee-Ya) that they make from scratch each day, and the Salsa (although its not for those who don’t like spicy). That is how you know its real texas BBQ, because of the Tex-Mex influences (and the fact that their is a dry rub, and the sauce is added at your pleasure). The prices are reasonable and the proprietor is great to talk too. As someone who lived in Texas for more than 75% of my life, I say this is the closest thing you can get to Texas Bar-B-Que outside the Texas Hill Country, and is better than a huge amount of the BBQ you could actually buy in Texas.I’m in their once a week, so I hope to see you there.
The name says it all. This is real deal BBQ. I grew up in BBQ country cuttin teeth on pit BBQ and this place rocks!Get the beans, they’re awesome and you can’t beat the homemade tortillas!
Pretty good flavors from this little BBQ place. Good Q comes and goes in Richmond, so take advantage of this good BBQ! I’ve tried the pulled pork and the brisket, and they were both very good. The sides were very good as well. Just a solid BBQ place in a town with not much BBQ to offer at all. Hope it sticks around!
