Pleasant surprise…. If you’ve read any of my previous reviews, then you know I’m a sucker for country/seafood buffets. If there’s a country or seafood buffet in Louisiana or Mississippi, there’s a good chance that I’ve been there. So, I was excited when I found that this place is now offering a nightly buffet (Thurs/Fri/Sat), in addition to their lunch buffet. My wife and I went for the Friday night seafood buffet, which we had heard good things about. When we first walked in, I was slightly disappointed when I saw the size of the buffet, because it was really small. However, once I started eating the food my demeanor quickly changed. While I found the fried foods to be pretty average, the casserole/homestyle dishes were all superb. Shrimp n’ potato stew, shrimp scampi (well, it was called that but was different from any other scampi I’ve ever had), crab au gratin, seafood mirliton casserole, broccoli and cheese casserole — all of it was great. Their gumbo was the darkest, richest gumbo I’ve ever had, packed with crabs and other goodies. The shrimp and corn soup was legit, too. Everything was well-seasoned and I was really impressed with how good it all was. Honestly, I’d much rather have a small buffet with great items on it, than a larger buffet with a bunch of crap on it. My only gripes about the place were that 1) the shrimp weren’t deveined (which is always a turnoff for me); and 2) I felt the price ($18.95) was a little steep (I wouldn’t have minded so much if the cost of drink and dessert was included, but it wasn’t); and 3) they put the food out hot at 5pm, and then it sits there… meaning if you come at 7pm, there’s a good possibility you’ll still be eating the food that was put out at 5 (depending on how busy they are.) All in all though, it was a good meal and I left full and happy — it’s a hidden gem off the beaten path.
