When we first entered the restaurant we felt a little out of place. The setting was grand to say the least; what with the high ceilings and the molding. The server Phil was amicable and well spoken, we let him know that my wife had some food allergies. A few minutes later the young chef came out. He was very attentive and was more than willing to accommodate us. We had the blueberry salad and the gumbo. The salad was nice, clean and balanced. The gumbo was loaded with seafood which was very tender, the corn was a nice touch and a bit of a surprise. One of the best gumbos we have tasted. Next we had the pork and filet. The pork was cooked perfectly medium, which might be off putting to some people but we really liked it. The filet was also cooked nicely, medium rare. For desert we shared the cobbler. At the end of the meal the chef checked with us to make sure we enjoyed our meal. We chatted for a few minutes and he told us about the farmers market and where he gets his products. We can tell he is very passionate. We really enjoyed ourselves. It was a great evening, we will definitely return .
Great meal and relaxing atmosphere!. I heard about the Carriage House from one of my friends from work and I decided to give them a try. The plantation was busy and looked like they had a few weddings going on. We enjoyed our slow walk throughout the gardens and made our way to the Carriage House restaurant that is on the property. The Turtle bar was busy and it took a little while to be seated. The service seemed to be a little under staffed, but we had decent service. Once we got our food we were glad we took the trip to this destination. I ordered the strawberry salad as my appetizer and the porter house steak with sweat potato mash. My wife had the grilled scallops for her appetizer and the slow cooked chicken dish. All the food tasted fresh and delicious. Even though it was a busy Saturday night we had a great evening with great food and wine.
Dissatisfied Diners. We ate at the restaurant recently and were disappointed in the limited menu selections as well as the food tastiness. Even though there were few patrons, it took longer than acceptable to get our food. We will not return.
Great dinning experience. I went with a girlfriend for a dinner. Our reservation was at 7:30pm and we tried the Chef’s special tasting menu. It was a wonderful experience. Joe, the Chef came out and explained every items on the menu, where he got the food, how he prepared them and presented on the plates. I love the hibiscus leaf with a touch of citrus, summer tomato salad, fish in a clear mushroom broth. The food was great and the chef made it one of the best dining experience for me. Highly recommended!
Great plantation experience!. The Carriage House offered a unique style of cooking set in a wonderful dining room. The food served was very fresh and it showed in the flavor of the dishes that the Chef really cares about showcasing the ingredients in the dish. The lemon fish on top of the mushroom ragout was well balanced and really showcased the fresh mushrooms. Mushroom and fish are two thing many restaurants will over cook, but at the carriage house both were cooked perfectly having just the right bite to it. After enjoying a nice meal at the carriage house we dined at Latil’s Landing the next night. The food at Latil’s lived up to the hype, however me and my wife still preferred the light and delicate lemon fish dish that was on the seasonal menu at the carriage house.
Neat place but the food wasn’t worth it. The setting and the grounds were nice. The finch cage in the dining room were also nice. The service was good. The food was a different story. I started with the oyster stew. It was cold! So disappointing. The waitress brought it back to warm it up. It was apparently microwaves since part of it were nuclear and other parts were still cold. The entree was the lemonfish with a crust of Zapps chips. The biggest problem is that it was bland. Also disappointing. My companion had the buffalo steak and liked it. It was an underwhelming experience. The unfortunate thing is that we had a great meal for less money at a restaurant in downtown Baton Rouge the next night. For a destination restaurant like this, the food needs to be special and it was not. On a separate note, walking the grounds before and after dinner was particularly nice.
