Not sure what to think. Stopped by today for lunch because I wanted to try something different. I’ve been looking for a decent sit-down Chinese restaurant in Baton Rouge other than Hunan, and although I’d heard good things about this place, I’d never eaten here, mainly because the parking lot is always empty, so I figured the food probably wasn’t any good.Anyway based on others’ recommendations I started out with the rice meat soup. It was basically some brown broth with white rice and a few tiny little pieces of meat, along with a little black pepper. There really wasn’t much to it. It was kinda bland and didn’t impress me too much.Everything else on the menu was the same typical Americanized dishes that you see at every other place in town. However, there were two unusual dishes that stood out: Bora Bora steak and Volcano shrimp. Even though they were more expensive than the lunch specials, I decided to give them a shot anyway.I was expecting the Bora Bora steak to be something tropical, with pineapples or mango or something in it. Instead, it was just pepper steak… steak with peppers and onions in a mild brown sauce, served on a hot plate. It was certainly nothing to rave about and it was pretty bland, just like the soup. I expected the Volcano shrimp to be some sort of spicy shrimp, but instead it was just some regular small shrimp sauteed with various veggies in a white sauce, served over crispy rice (think a Rice Krispie treat with no sugar). Once again, very bland and not all that great.The best thing I had were the eggrolls, which were better than most. I really wanted to like this place, but I just couldn’t. Everything was just so bland and blah. It took me 25 years to finally try this place and I doubt I’ll ever return.
Best Chinese Food in BR. Get the rice meat soup!! Eggrolls are fantastic! My favorite dish is the Lemon Chicken.
Have been coming here for 34 years and the food has been great the whole time. Get the rice meat soup. You’ll love it.
Expect anything more than cheap Chinese and you’ll be dissapointed
I have been going here since around 1986. The food has always been excellent and the staff is wonderful. Truly a great restaurant experience.
Highly recommended. Highly delicious.. A great little Chinese treasure in Baton Rouge! 😀 There’s usually a little old man in the kitchen cooking up the best Chinese food you’ll eat in the area and he’s never failed to cook up something amazing. I’ve been there often with my Taiwanese and Chinese friends, and it’s where they always choose for an authentic meal.Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, try to take someone who can read Chinese and ask for the Chinese menu. It has a lot of special items that you’ve probably never eaten before.
The food is not that great! I ordered shrimp and broccoli and my shrimp were soggy and tasteless. My husband ordered orange chicken with rice and he was truly dissatisfied, I mean no taste what so ever and the rice was gummy and we rapidly ask for our refund back! Now I see why the parking lot was always empty!
