I had such high hopes for Tacos El Gordo. Right off the bat- the name. Fat tacos sounds like a winner to me. When I walked up to the restaurant I see a Hispanic gentleman,- a working man with dirty boots and clothes, entering to get lunch. That’s a good sign. The TVs all have soccer on them- more good news. The entire staff was Hispanic- not a gringo in sight. Everything was falling into place for a solid lunch. Then my food arrived. I ordered the mixed fajita grill (beef, chicken and pastor) frijoles charro and guacamole. Why is it seemingly impossible for anyone cooking in the state of Louisiana to make good beef fajitas? This meat had 0 flavor. The chicken was incredibly dry. The pastor was actually the best of the three. When serving fajitas, the onion and pepper mix should be an accompaniment. You don’t want to rely on it to have all the flavor for the entire meal. Beans also lacked flavor. I’m sure you can buy cilantro somewhere in town. And, while using hot dogs in your beans may make them seem more like you would make at home, lets be honest. That’s just being cheap. Also they were out of guacamole. Here’s what I did like- good tortillas, although small. Great chips- not thin like most places. Green salsa was decent, but red was more of a vinegar based sauce- not salsa. And you can order Mexican Cokes. One and done as the search for good Mexican food in Louisiana continues.
Best Taco/Burrito joint in New Orleans. Awesome friendly service, authentic fresh food, salsa, guacamole, fresh made chips. They have a drive thru and they do breakfast burritos.
Fast, Friendly, and Delicious. We visited Tacos El Gordo on April 10, 2015. We merely stumbled upon the place as other restaurants in Kenner were too busy to accomodate us. Tacos El Gordo offered us delicious food at a reasonable price, with great service. The food was well-cooked and packed with flavors that all complimented one another. We had fresh chips before our meal and three different salsas available to try. They serve beer, soda, water, and other drinks with one’s meal so you certainly have options. Beyond the delicious food, the price was reasonable, the atmosphere was clean, and the servers were friendly.
