Unfortunately they have a new chef who decided to do a whole new menu… No more seafood gumbo which was always good. The crab bisque was warm, not hot, and the charbroiled oysters were smaller than little neck clams and not very good! They included a baked roll with no butter on it! Im afraid Blue Dog has fallen off my list of good places to eat… Thats a shame as I always liked the old menu. Bring back the old chef please!!!
Ive been wanting to try this place for years since I moved here, and finally went. I was very disappointed! All 3 plates we ordered were pretty much cold, there was not a large variety of items to order, and food portion was small and overpriced. $18 for a bowl of cold corn bisque, $16 for one piece of fish on a sad pile of slaw.
You have got to be kidding me! Cold food that is supposed to be hot. Shrimp gumbo that is nothing more than a runny rue with some popcorn shrimp. Two of four diners at our table had to send their plates back because the food was cold. Servers were slow to respond and the place was not that busy. Now I know why the dog is blue! Cold food and poor service.
I first met George Rodrigue in the late 90s at the Red River Arts Festival. I was so taken with his simple tribute of love to his dog that became an expression of art known internationally. When I found there was the Blue Dog Cafe in Lafayette that prominently featured his work and whose moniker paid homage to the artist, I had to visit. The building is ringed with live oaks which are lit at night making the ambience uniquely unforgettable. The atmosphere is a gallery of art that patrons enjoy throughout the building. The dcor and presentation is more casual than formal, although this is a white linen table cloth establishment. There is a live jazz band providing smooth sounds that compliment dinner conversation. A bar provides a wide selection of cocktails, wines and spirits.Notably there is a white sheet of paper covering the white linen table cloth with crayons provided for doodling amid the art. I sketched my rendition of the Blue Dog while we waited on entrees.Jordan was our waitress and provided excellent patron service for our visit. She was very knowledgeable about the preparation of the dishes and made recommendations we found helpful. Our occasion was a birthday celebration coupled with an out of town visit so this was our first experience at the restaurant.First we were served our drinks, and our table candle lit to start our dining experience. We placed our orders and grabbed our phones to walk around and snap photos. We were by no means the only diners to do this so be aware if this situation bothers you.We ordered the fried seafood wantons as an appetizer, which was accompanied by a plum ginger reduction sauce. The crispy texture of the fried wanton, along with the spicy, cream filling and seafood made a well balanced bite. Pairing this with the plum ginger reduction was flavor perfection. We were so thankful for Jordan’s recommendation.Next came our entrees, and French bread pisteleros and whipped butter. I ordered the Crab meat au Gratin, paired with corn maque choux, and dirty rice. The crabmeat au gratin had a velvety cream sauce with a cheesy baked crust featuring lumps of Louisiana blue crab. This is comfort food for those growing up on the water. It was indescribably satisfying. The corn maque choux was peppery sweet and had good chew and taste. Unfortunately, the dirty rice was cold and sticky. It just sat a little too long in the back before service. My companions ordered the Fried Crawfish platter and the Chicken Teche. The crawfish were as big as shrimp and fried perfect, served with Cajun fries and corn maque choux. The Chicken Teche was a chicken breast grilled and topped with crabmeat au gratin, served with corn maque choux and dirty rice. The chicken was tender and delicious as well as full flavored. Unfortunately this portion of dirty rice was cold and sticky. This was a great dining experience and I will go back when I’m in town again. I just won’t order the dirty rice.
I hadn’t visited Blue dog in sometime so we went for lunch the other day. The service was good atmosphere is kid friendly and prices are in line with other local seafood restaurants. I ordered the crab cakes and was slightly disappointed with the amount of filler but nothing beats Charley Gs crab cakes. Everyone else really seemed to enjoy their meals. I’ll be back for dinner next time
Love the art of Rodrigue, love the theme of the restaurant, the food disappoints. I don’t know what they are doing in the kitchen but almost every time I have gone food is under seasoned and just lackluster. Compared to Prejean’s, Fezzo’s, Randal’s and Don’s the atmosphere is great but the food is below average.
Had dinner here on a Monday night. Was very busy and parking hard to find, but the hostess was able to sit us right away. I had the Louisiana Purchase dish and it was amazing! Such good flavours! The place is very large, but the lighting is a little bright and harsh in the back area where we were. Seemed a little better in the main dining part. And since it was so busy, it was very noisy as it was all open concept. Otherwise, very good service and food!
