During oyster season I eat a dozen raw oysters every Monday night. At 1/2 off the regular price its the best value for oysters on the half shell in acadiana and a bonus of 2 for 1 draft beers to top it off. They also have a steak and shrimp special on the same night. Its a 10oz ribeye and 5 shrimp (fried or grilled) for $17.99. My favorite dish though is not on the menu. Its the seafood fried rice usually served with a loaded bake potato. This is a must try dish that is absolutely delicious. The service is always excellent unless they get real busy on the Monday specials then is slows a little but not too bad. I would advice you to get there early on Mondays during oyster season. The old man Don would be proud.
A standard for things like crawfish 1/2 & 1/2, seafood gumbo, crawfish bisque, fried catfish, stuffed shrimp, etc. Occasionally has fried frog legs, though not always. A real highlight is the seafood salad – plentiful shrimp, crab, crawfish over a bed of greens. I also really like the jacked-up shrimp and jacked-up oysters. Cheese-stuffed hamburger steak is really good too. Bar area has been remodeled relatively recently – I prefer dining there. More updated and a bit livelier. Has an open area to see oysters being chargrilled. Monday’s are 1/2 chargrilled oysters and oysters on the 1/2 shell, also with 2 for 1 beer. A classic place for Lafayette dining.
The boiled shrimp were overcooked/rubbery, so the server had the kitchen prepare another serving. This time, the shrimp were not overcooked, but the potatoes were still raw on the inside. Disappointing experience.
Don’s is a great place to eat oysters and their burger is awesome. Everything else is okay. It’s really just a bunch of fried food pretending to be cajun. If you’re a tourist in search of true cajun food, make the trip to Pat’s in Henderson.
Don’s is a good place to hang out for appetizers and drinks or to have a dinner. The portions could be a little larger for what you pay, but their menu items are pretty good. Stuffed crabs, zydeco shrimp, and bread pudding here are all delicious.
I was never a huge fan of Don’s (either of them) but it’s really taken a step back over the last few years. Bottom line: the good is just not very good. Perhaps, it’s a testament to better seafood options in Lafayette that have popped up over the last decade, but Don’s isn’t even top 15 in the city. Because of proximity, we usually give Don’s a chance every few months, but that will be coming to an end. I didn’t really have an issue with service, promptness, atmosphere or cleanliness; those were all actually enjoyable. The problem is, if I’m going to pay 28+ for a meal, it better be good. And too often at this establishment, unfortunately, it just isn’t.
Had a great meal. We loaded up on apps like roasted oysters, jacked up shrimp and a few others. Then for the entrees I had a seafood salad since I was pretty full already. Salad was relatively small and the house dressing wasn’t that great. Overall we had a good time and the favors were good
