The Boll is back and better than ever! The new owners have really captured the history of this place and focused on returning it to its glory days! If you love the classic diner feel and food this IS the place in Shreveport / Bossier to stop. The breakfast offerings may be the usual diner fare however the quality and preparation far outshine any of the other local diners. Even a simple 2 egg omelet with just cheese has an amazing flavor and texture long missing from the local diner scene. Ditto the pancakes, grits and biscuits. Lunch brings a whole new level of diner goodness to the table. This is the best local version of chicken fried steak I’ve had in many years! You don’t have to wonder about this CFS, it did NOT come from a freezer nor the gravy from a mix. The patty melt is perfect. Grilled onions, Swiss cheese and a beef patty off the flat-top on rye bread, delicious! The Cotton Boll really shows it’s roots with great, fresh side dishes. No soggy overcooked cabbage here! The greens, black-eyed peas, lima beans and rice were fresh, well prepared and spot on. The hot water corn bread is another item that is at the top of it’s field locally, the best I’ve had in town. The only dishes that were less than stellar were the corn muffins, too dry, and the shrimp gumbo, tiny salad shrimp. The atmosphere is every bit as great as the food. This tiny building exudes local history, not just on the walls but in the people that frequent it as well as the staff. I’d suggest a visit in-between the breakfast and lunch rushes. Be prepared to meet some nice folks and maybe join in some conversations with the other diners, it’s that kind of place. On one visit we met a couple of guys riding through town on their way back to California. They had done their research and decided the two places in town to hit were Herby K’s and The Cotton Boll; good call guys!
