Sonny’s has returned as Fin’s Seafood. Not sure why the name change, very little has changed. If you were a fan of Sonny’s that’s good news, if you weren’t well… I’ve been searching for a Cajun / Seafood place to get something that’s not fried locally so I ordered the Grilled Blackened Fish Plate for lunch. First off if you are a stickler for accuracy, you’ll be disappointed that this is not a traditional blackened fish but seasoned and flattop grilled with onions. Three medium sized fillets on rice or fries, slaw and hushpuppies clocked in at $10.99. I’ve got no idea why places charge more for grilled, it should be quicker and easier than battering and deep frying the fish? The lunch fried fish is only $7.99 also a 3 piece offering. The quality surpasses Sam’s but you get less food, less salt too! The coleslaw was fresh and crunchy but smothered in mayonnaise and sweet, not my favorite. The hushpuppies were unremarkable, two long cylindrical bland ones and a more traditional round one with more flavor but dry. One change from the old, no more beans, don’t get that one? Service was great, super friendly and even thou it is a walk up counter I was regularly checked on and brought drink refills! I basically like Fin’s but it is an example of many local places that are just treading water unable to generate the needed business to maintain or better, to upgrade their property. The old, very old Sonny’s sign still stands out front, only a rented mobile sign announces the new name. The inside only received a bit of a clean up with some old decorations removed and a new painting with the new name added. The menu remains unchanged with the exception of the beans being removed. They had a chance to revamp and reinvent themselves anew, an unfortunate missed opportunity.
Closed for renovations at the moment. Hoping for a great outcome! Just like many others have said, the food has declined. However, a new owner took over recently in hopes to bring it back to what it used to be. As with anything, it takes a while for a new crew to get in the swing of things, so be patient with them. I have high hopes for this place. 🙂
