Wait staff is rude, drinks are watered down, food is overpriced, always either undercooked or overdone, never had a decent meal there and tried multiple times. I give up. I don’t see why anyone likes this crappy place.
We ate at Tejas Kitchen for the first time yesterday. I was a bit disappointed to say the least. I ordered the soft taco trio, got briskit, pork and shrimp. Well, I could not taste the cilantro at all. There was no salsa to drizzle on the tacos and I have had much better food from a little stand down the street in Southern Hills. Just food, no flavor, a real let down.I also ordered an Old Fashioned, my favorite drink in a restaurant and selected a top shelf liquor to go in it. It was like a whiskey and water. There was an orange slice and a cherry or two in the bottom of the small glass, but you could not even taste them. Just not worth ordering. The first Old Fashioned I have ever ordered that I really did not like. And to add insult to injury, when I got home and really looked at the bill, not just the total to use as my what to tip guide, I saw it said Double! That was why it was so strong. I have never ordered a double in my life. I guess the waiter took it upon him self so that he would get more of a tip. And $13, that was more than my meal.Would also say there is no ramp anywhere near the front door, I used my car to boost up to the sidewalk. And finally I want to say, I was the only table in the place. Not one customer there when I walked in or ate or walked out. Gee, it may be different on another day, but it was dead. Maybe I now know why. Oh, and we were not brought a glass of water, but after the drinks arrived I realized it and had to holler for the waiter to com out of the kitchen to get some for me. Never have had that happen.I may try the place one more time, but am going to call Weston McElwee, the owner and tell him about our visit. He needs to do some or the place will not be there much longer. $85 dollars is too much for what we had. Hubby had an appetizer and a $3 drink so the rest was mine. Uh. Not good. Bella Fresca make a beautiful drink for way less than I paid and even their burger and fries are 10 times more delicious than what I had. Well, again, I will call the owner today and address these issues and depending on what he says will determine whether or not I ever go back. I hope it was the waiter and not the restaurant, he did make the drinks and may have just not put the tacos together right. We shall see. And if it is the restaurant, well, I can understand no customers.
I am really pulling for this restaurant to do well. It’s refreshing to find another place in town that has a thoughtful menu such as this one. They seem to be adding/changing things often, in a good way. It seems to be a little pricier for the atmosphere. Dim the lights a little more at night and I believe this place could attract a Bella Fresca type, foodie crowd. I’ve had the chicken taco salad twice and it is wonderful! It is served on fry bread, which melts in your mouth. The fried avocado/grilled shrimp appetizer is delicious. I ordered the rainbow trout on my last visit, the sides were great, but the trout was a little salty for my taste. Also, the spring mix salad with herbed goat cheese balls hits the nail on the head.*Update: This has become a lunch favorite for me. The lunch menu has a large variety to choose from and everything is really reasonably priced! Also, they now have a great happy hour EVERY DAY from 3-7. I just recently tried a prickly pear margarita from there, and it was great! I have raised my rating to a 4 because I feel they have made some thoughtful improvements!
Disappointed- excited that someone had opened a southwestern restaurant. Good looking menu- but I cannot say how the food tasted. We never got that far. Seated quickly, and then………someone brought water and told us our server would be right with us. We studied the menu and made our selections then……..nothing, we waited and watched as others around us were seated and served. I finally asked to speak to a manager and suggested they continue training their staff and we left. Good luck to those who are served, let us know how the food tastes.
Waited at the bar over 45 min on an early Sat evening for a supposed 30 min wait for a table, then when asked about our table, the hostess only shrugged and could say nothing. The bartender was a little pushy about closing out our tab even though we may have wanted another drink with dinner. However, we will never find out now. We left and went elsewhere. Tip: Don’t come here without a reservation for supper.
Update April 2017:A recent lunch trip made me a bit concerned for Tejas. After having a tough time finding a parking spot we were shocked to find the place mostly empty. Upon entering there was no hostess and nobody greeted us. We sat ourselves and the server made his way over fairly quick. Neither our server, any of the staff or the customers seemed all that happy to be there, zero energy, no smiles. The food remained good but since my first visit I’ve been less impressed and as another reviewer noted the price for atmosphere and serving size is a bit high. Perhaps dinner is more lively but after this trip I’m less likely to find out. Original Review: Southwest flavors arrive in Shreveport! It may have been a few years since Bobby Flay came on the scene bringing attention to great southwest dishes but this is cutting edge for the Ark-La-Tex! As you enter the space once occupied by the Real Pickle you are greeted by a fresh cowboy chic homage to the great Southwest. A large bar takes up most of one side, the other is filled with booths and tables. The restaurant is at the corner of a plaza so the patio wraps around the outside. Weathered wood and rust covered fixtures adorn the inside, nice touch. My server was great, he was obviously enthusiastic about the new eatery and especially its spicier offerings, I knew we’d get along just fine! I began my lunch (yep there’s a lunch menu!) with the Tejas Truffle Chicken Wings. They were great on their own but add the smoked habanero dressing and it’s off the charts! For my entre I chose the Navajo Tacos. Fantastic flavors, perfectly grilled beef atop fry bread with cilantro basil pico. It’s an outstanding dish but the fry bread was a bit dense, too thick and chewy to fold to make it a taco. The charro beans were some of the best of the variety I’ve had. My server described several of the offerings, I look forward to trying the chicken fried steak (lunch only) the Rainbow Trout and the grilled quail appetizer. The Cochinita Pibil Poboy sounds great too, and thou it originated in Mexico it’s certainly not on any menu locally. Pure Southwestern cuisine? No. But Tejas is an original and well done establishment that fits in nicely on the Line Ave. food strip.
