My husband and I stopped in for lunch. When we arrived, there were only 2 other tables occupied since it had just opened. As we waited for our food, several other tables filled up. We waited, and waited, and waited. All we ordered was one tempura roll and an order of yaki udon and we sat at a regular table instead of the hibachi to save on time. We waited AN HOUR, as we watched the other tables get served their food. Finally our food arrived, however the noodles that were described as being grilled were more like boiled. The beef was obviously boiled as well since it had big chunks of white fat deposits all over it. It was basically inedible. The tempura roll was just OK compared to other Japanese steakhouses we have been to. The tempura was greasy and very cold, as if it had been sitting. It wasn’t even rolled tight, as it fell completely apart when I tried to pick a piece up. Our server did apologize and said that the reason that our food took so long was because the kitchen was just very busy. ( ok, but we were only the 3rd table filled!) We waited for sub par food that we didn’t even eat. We paid our bill and left but had spent at least an hour and a half in the restaurant, leaving no time to go elsewhere for lunch. Bummer.
I’m giving Kume a 3.0 because the sushi was decent for being 50 miles from the shore. We sat at a regular table and not the hibachi grill section. To start the miso was a bit watery, lacking much flavor. The beef negimaki, were OK, with a decent sauce, but not great. My Combo Udon stir-fry was missing the beef that was on the combo menu, but had scallops, a decent substitution when you’re aware of it. Similarly, my GF ordered the Nabeyaki Udon hot pot, which had imitation crab stick instead of the shrimp tempura as described in the menu. This was basically a chicken stock with udon noodles, fish cake, chicken and the crab stick. By far the worst I’ve tried and this is a favorite at many Japanese places we visit. The one bright spot of our meal was the Specialty Sushi Roll we tried, it was fresh tasting, and an interesting and well complimenting mix of spicy tuna, yellowtail, and a few other things. So, the final verdict, I’d skip this place unless you are close by and need a sushi fix.
