  • High Prices ! Bad Food !. I couldn't believe when I got the bill $75.00 for lunch for three people without any alcohol or desert . I thought the food …

  • Not impressed. Small portions, overpriced, rude staff that spend half of their time outside smoking. Would not recommend. Cleanliness is iffy!…

Horrid. I waited over an hour for my food and it wasn’t particularly appetizing.

Excellent. Ten of us ate here and everyone was very happy with their meal. Mussels appetizer was one of the best I have had anywhere…and I have sampled them across the US and Europe. All fish entrees were cooked perfectly. Not one was overcooked. Service was spot on. Best place in this part of Maine.

Awful. I’ve been here twice.. First was ok, small portions, crowded but ok. Then we went in Wednesday. Ordered some scrod dish with brie. 2 of us ordered it. Both of us couldn’t eat it – way too salty. Waitress just said ‘Oh it’s the smoked .. something .. mussels? can’t remember that makes it that way’. HORSEPUCKEY! Anyway was a business meeting so didn’t feel like making a fuss. Also the shrimp cocktail with 4 medium size soggy shrimp for $11? C’mon. The ONLY thing that was any good was the wine..NEVER AGAIN

Repeat Customer. I’ve eaten at Slates dozens of times…..before and after the fire. The food has always been inventive, fresh and tasty. As far as the decor, it’s whimsy, people. The place has always had a funky air about it. That’s what distinguishes it from the mediocre decor of most local places. I find it cheerful and don’t think the mural is a literal statement on anything. I love the staff. They couldn’t be more accomodating or friendly. I give the place, the staff and especially the food, four stars!

This is a Maine tradition…wonderful people and awesome creative menu …the owner Wendy still in the kitchen turning the pans! Please disregard the negative reviews of this jewel – some have nothing but spin as a lifestyle…..

Slates’s Was Great!!. Went there to see Ellis Paul, who was absolutely spectacular, but was equally impressed by the quality of the food. The wait staff needed to be more attentive but upon closer inspection, I think that issue was due to the fact that they didn’t have enough staff to handle the crowd. Overall, a great experience.

Hugely disappointed… We came from over an hour away to experience this restaurant. The service was awful, the decor tacky and the menu unfortunately bland! If this place were in a remote northern area we may have been impressed, but for Hallowell it is an embarrassment. We feel our money was poorly spent and will not be back.
